Words of Wisdom From a Young Man #3 of 3

February 19, 2009
In many ways, God is hidden to us. We cannot fathom His purposes. Still, we persevere in faith, knowing He's active. Runners in life's race must learn that God is too big for anyone to comprehend. A man named Job was sorely tested by God, and then found some wisdom by discussing his plight with a young man named Elihu. Consider this: is God big enough to superintend your suffering?

For a thoughtful runner, life's ultimate question is not "will I win this race?" but rather, "when I die, will I live again?" That's the provocative question Job raised several thousand years ago. And that question still haunts men and women today. Surely this brief life is not all there is? Something deep down inside cries out for a sense of long-term meaning.

When a runner trips and falls, the competitors run on by. Until the coach arrives, he or she bears the pain of defeat alone. During his severe trials, Job of old underwent great pain, yet he found little comfort from his three friends. He bore that pain alone, even in the midst of others. His experience teaches us how to really be there when a friend is in need.

What are friends for? Hopefully, to be there when you need them. Otherwise, you run life's race as if you're the only one on the track. When you're hit with bad news you can scarcely absorb, a friend can be a great help. However, the friends of Job were scant comfort when he was undergoing his severe trials. Their counsel demonstrated the limits of human understanding.
