When We Have Hurt Others #1 of 3

December 3, 2010
Sometimes our bad choices only affect us personally. But more often, they impact the lives of those around us. Bad decisions bring with them bad consequences, often in the lives of those close to us. How do we unravel the messes we make when not acting with God’s guidance? Or, messes we made before coming to Christ? Today: lessons from the Apostle Paul on handling messes like these.

The Bible warns us to guard our hearts, lest we turn away from the counsel of God. It’s very easy to rely on our own instincts. King Asa was faithful to God, except at the end of his life. Sadly, his finish line was marred by the consequences of a bad choice. Today: lessons we can take home from one man’s failure to conclude his race of life well. Please stay with us.

Jeremiah wrote, “The heart is deceitful above all things. Who can understand it?” Yes, why fail at the finish line? At the end, King Asa’s long faithfulness to God crumbled. He chose to bribe a nearby King with the temple’s gold and silver. Politics can corrupt the best of men, and Asa was no exception. Today: judgment falls for making a really bad deal.

“….what a tangled web we weave when first we purpose to deceive….” Many people fear their secrets will one day be revealed. The webs we weave through deception entangle us with unintended consequences. Today: a story from the Bible of a faithful king who failed near his finish line, leaving Israel in a state of war.

God has many ways to persuade us to do what He wants done. For the prophet Jonah, it involved his environment. Jonah ran from God’s command to preach in Ninevah. But he could not outrun the long reach of God, who appointed several “persuaders” to bring Jonah to a place of submission: a great fish, a plant, a worm, and today, a scorching east wind.

When we come to a fork in the road, we have two choices. If we choose the wrong fork, we have to face the consequences. That’s what happened to Jonah, told by God to preach to people he did not like. His attempt to flee brought him to face the God of the second chance, the God whose will would ultimately be done. Today: lessons we can apply when coming to our forks in the road.

Obligations…we all have them. Some are like millstones around our necks, and we’d do anything to be free of the pressure. Today: a story of an obligation God gave to a prophet, and his amazing journey to avoid that obligation. Jonah was told to go preach to the people of Ninevah, and everything in him said “no way.” The lessons for all of us will soon be clear, so stay tuned.

Choices made in a moment can have repercussions that last for generations. That’s what happened to Israel’s King David. He made an impulsive choice regarding Bathsheba, and a pregnancy resulted. This set in motion the inevitable cover-up, in which her husband was killed to hide the sin. For David, and for us, cover-ups don’t work. The outcome involved severe temporal judgment.

Collateral damage: that’s a military euphemism used to describe unintended civilian casualties of war. King David committed adultery with the wife of one of his military officers. To hide her pregnancy, David decided that some collateral damage was necessary, and Uriah the Hittite was left to die in battle on purpose. Today’s focus: the high price of sin.

The flames of sexual desire can be fanned in an instant. If we’re not on our guard, any of us can make the mistake of a lifetime. A mistake in the moral area has long term consequences. King David made a big mistake with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite. A story he’d wished could stay private got public real fast, and a king of Israel was in serious trouble.

When you find out that you’ve been duped by someone, and made a promise to them you should never have made, what do you do? Israel was deceived by the Gibeonites, and vowed to not destroy them. They honored that vow. As a result, the Gibeonites served Israel for centuries. Today: how God can make lemonade out of the lemons life brings us from time to time.
