When Jesus Observes Our Vision, Part 2 of 3 (What Jesus Thinks of His Church)

July 25, 2016

In what is now Turkey, the church at Philadelphia was commended by Jesus for being faithful to His name. Churches still grow even in hostile places… churches about which Jesus says, “I’ve set before you an open door, and no one can shut it.”

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It takes gall to celebrate sin in a church. Yet this happened at Thyatira, a church singled out by Jesus for judgment in the book of Revelation. Its false prophetess advocated sexual immorality. And false prophets in our time advocate for false teachings and sinful behavior too!

What is holiness? It means being set apart from sin and being consecrated for God’s purposes. This standard is not an option for a child of God. One of the seven churches Jesus addressed in Revelation was targeted for its failure to be holy.

Jesus addressed seven local churches in the book of Revelation, and spoke of those who “overcome.” So, who are the overcomers? Will you and I receive the promises only overcomers can claim?

Teachers play a crucial role in the formation of youth. In the same way, Bible teachers have enormous influence on the members of a church. False doctrines are easily spread. Jesus tells an ancient church to reject teachings He hates, and we should do the same.

In the book of Revelation, Jesus addressed the church at Pergamum in what is now Turkey. In the strongest terms, He decried their willingness to adopt false teachings, which actually advocated immorality. Could this happen today?
