When Jesus Observes Our Vision #3 of 3

May 12, 2009
When churches check themselves out against those listed in Revelation chapters two and three, there's one church they want to be like.... The church at Philadelphia earned high marks from Jesus for its faithfulness and its vision. They persevered, they kept his word, and they never denied his name. Today: a look at the importance of vision, and going through the open doors Jesus sets before us.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. In what is now Turkey, the ancient church at Philadelphia earned the commendation of Jesus for its faithfulness to his name. And today, faithful churches are growing even in hostile places...churches about which Jesus says "I've set before you an open door, and no one can shut it." Some even come to faith in Christ through dreams which lead them to seek out God's word.

Every Christian longs to hear "well done" when he or she stands before Jesus one day. The same applies to the local church. Jesus addressed seven local churches in the book of Revelation. Often, his words were sharp. But to one church, they were glowing. Today, we'll see why this church was praised, and how churches today can hear those same words of commendation.

In the final analysis, it won't matter whether you were rich or poor, famous or unknown. Only one thing will matter...whether you as a believer were an overcomer. Jesus makes that clear in his analysis of seven local churches in the book of Revelation. Those who overcome will be given white garments, because Jesus will say they are worthy.

Sober words...we'd rather hear happy words. But Jesus is quite clear about His expectations for every local church. "Be watchful...hold fast to what you've heard...repent...or else I will come upon you as a thief..." These are the words of Jesus to an ancient church. Could he be saying them to your church, or mine? Today: facing up to our obligations as believers.

Self-delusion: it's almost too easy. The drunk says "I can quit anytime." All too many do not see reality. Some churches think all is well. Great numbers convince them God is doing a mighty work. Today, we'll visit an ancient church Jesus proclaimed to be dead, even though it thought it was alive. Want a reality check for your church? Stay with us.

The eyes of the risen Jesus are like a flame of fire. They sift through our excuses to identify those who overcome. Jesus mentions overcomers many times during his evaluations of seven ancient churches in the book of Revelation. What overcomers are, and what they are to overcome is our focus on today's broadcast. Do you want to be an overcomer? Stay with us.

It takes a lot of gall to celebrate sin and encourage it within the church. Yet this is exactly what happened at Thyatira. This church was one of seven singled out by Jesus for words of judgment in the book of Revelation. It had a false prophetess who advocated sexual immorality and idolatry. Today's false prophets say they hear directly from God. Now, let's hear what Jesus thinks.

Mention "holiness" to many people, and they immediately envision someone locked up in a monastery or perhaps a convent. But holiness really means being set apart, or separated from sin and unto God. This standard is not an option for a child of God: He expects us to live pure lives. One of the seven churches Jesus addressed in Revelation was targeted for its failure to be holy.

The church shines brightest when it's seen in dark places. Jesus commended local churches that held fast to truth. He addressed seven local churches in the book of Revelation, and spoke there of those who "overcome." So, who are the overcomers? Can you and I be overcomers and receive the promises only overcomers can claim? Today: more lessons from a place called Pergamum.

In elementary school, teachers drive home the concepts of the ABC's, numbers, and how to read and write. Teachers play a crucial role in the formation of our youth. In the same way, Bible teachers have enormous influence on members of a church. False doctrines can be easily spread. Today, listen as Jesus tells an ancient church to reject the teachings he hates.
