When Jesus Observes Our Suffering #3 of 3 (What Jesus Thinks of His Church)

March 22, 2013

In the church of Jesus, persecution is assured, and there is no “Get Out of Jail Free” card. In fact, Jesus urges us to be faithful unto death, that we might obtain the crown of life. It’s not a promise of health and wealth, but it is a promise of eventual triumph.

Is there anything you would give your life for? The early followers of Jesus often became martyrs. The word martyr simply means “witness.” Even today, in many places, being a witness for Christ can cost you your life. Jesus knows every time one of His followers makes the supreme sacrifice, and today, He commends a church willing to follow Him even to death.

We don’t know a lot about the New Testament church at Smyrna in what is now modern Turkey. There’s no record of its founding. But what we do know speaks volumes about the opinion Jesus had of this church, and the opinion He has of some of our churches today. Few of us face the persecution inflicted on His followers in Smyrna. What would happen if we did?

Jesus has clear expectations of His followers and of His church. It’s our job to make sure He’s pleased. His words to seven churches in Revelation describe conditions that we face today. And the response Jesus wanted to see from the churches of the past is the response He desires from us today: repentance and  resumption of doing the works He approves.

“I have good news, and I have bad news.” We’ve all heard this phrase before. Jesus had “news” for seven churches in the early chapters of the book of Revelation. For the first church, His message was a mix of good and bad. He gave the good news first, but then expressed His judgment on a matter He felt was crucial.

New Christians often have a radiant love for Jesus. Sadly, as time passes, that love sometimes cools. In the first century AD, Ephesus was a major city along the coast of what is now Turkey. Jesus commended the Ephesian church, but then chastised them for leaving their first love. What would He say about your church?

We learn from the book of Philippians that God has highly exalted Jesus, giving Him the name which is above every name. That same exalted Jesus fills the book of Revelation—a Jesus with hair as white as snow and eyes of flaming fire.  In John’s vision of Jesus, he falls before Him as one dead. Jesus then details His judgments on seven churches of that day.

Have you ever wondered what Jesus looks like? Famous paintings give the impression of a man with long hair and a kind face, but the Jesus of artwork is a far cry from the Jesus of Revelation—a Christ with eyes of flaming fire. His words thundered to seven churches of the first century: words that thunder as we imagine His opinion of our churches today.

The Bible ends with the book of Revelation and a glimpse into the future. Here we see Christ in glory, the Lord of His church. Seven churches in what is now Turkey received a personal word from Jesus. These words tell us what He thought of those churches and, by implication, what He thinks of our churches today. His words sometimes commend, and sometimes sting.

We’re all born with a propensity to sin and a desire to seek revenge whenever we’re attacked, but vengeance is not something we have a right to. The Bible declares that “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” So, how do we adjust our instincts to agree with the Scriptures?

When someone attacks us, we want to attack back. But the Bible says, “Bless those who persecute you: bless and do not curse.” Today, some hard lessons on resolving conflict, and getting over past injustices.
