When God Judges a Nation, Part 1 of 4 (The Church in Babylon)

April 25, 2018

When the cup of iniquity is full, God pours out His wrath. Judah felt that wrath as invading armies looted Jerusalem and took the people into captivity. America may soon feel that same wrath. In this message we discover lessons we must heed from the fall of a nation long ago.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. God’s call to ancient Judah is the same as His call to America: repent of your sins and return to the God of your fathers. Clay on the potter’s wheel cannot control its destiny. Yet we think we can tell the Potter what to do. In this message we hear more about who is really in charge.

A lump of clay has no clue what its potter intends to make out of it. Jeremiah chapter 18 explains how God views Israel: as clay on His potter’s wheel. In this message we seek a right view of ourselves and a right view of God. Only then can life begin to make sense.

Many people think they are masters of their own destiny. But God sees His people as clay on a potter’s wheel, and since He’s the potter, He controls their destiny. In this message we learn to see ourselves as vessels God can make and remake as He chooses.

It’s a paradox. When people refuse sound teaching, God sends false prophets to give them lies to believe. Jeremiah teaches that false prophets in themselves are a judgment from God. In this message we hear the takeaway lessons from our look at false prophets.

True prophets of God get their message from God himself. False prophets draw their false messages from a variety of sources. In this message we learn how to spot those sources, and determine whether what we’re hearing is from God, or from somewhere else.

False prophets were a scourge in ancient Israel, and they are a scourge in our day. They tell us we’re basically good, and if we try hard, God will grade us on the curve. Jeremiah says otherwise, pointing to the deceit within each of us. In this message we learn more characteristics of false prophets.

In ancient Israel, false prophets put lies about God into the minds of God’s people. The same is true in our day. These false teachers diminish God’s holiness, exaggerate their goodness, and hide their real motives. In this message we learn how to recognize them when we hear them.

In a time of coming judgment, Jeremiah wept over the fate of his people. Do we in America weep for the many sins of our nation? In this message we learn the take-home principles from a time when everything in Israel was upside down—a time much like today.

Great deception took hold in ancient Israel, leading to idolatry and judgment. The same deceptions infect the thinking in our world. The news is often filled with the same destructive mindset that caused God to send Israel into Babylon.

We hear the warnings that our government is out of control. What was once wrong is now celebrated, and what was right is now considered wrong. To become so confused, people have to believe some awful lies. In this message we learn about four of these lies, and their inevitable consequences.
