When Giving Less Is More #1 of 4

July 16, 2010
When fundraising time rolls around at your church, attention often goes to those who can give large sums toward a project. But God’s attention may well go to that person who only has five dollars to their name. That gift might mean much more to the Lord than the five thousand dollars given by a rich man. Today: a story in the Bible that proves that very point.

Some Christians are blessed with amazing financial resources. What they may not realize is why God allowed them to have so much.  When Egypt let Israel go, they loaded them up with all they needed.  They would later find out why.  God wanted them to learn how to give.  Today, more lessons from the book of Exodus on giving as worship, and why we need to learn them.

Why do you give to your church or to other ministries?  Let’s not make the mistake of thinking that they are the recipients of your money.  While the check may pass through their books, the real receiver of anything we give is God Himself, the God who gives us the ability to earn the funds we contribute.   Listen to this message for more lessons from the Old Testament on how God views giving, and why His viewpoint should become ours.

The local church is a great resource in times of economic hardship. Here you can network with others, and help meet needs. Also, it’s here that we can learn the lessons God wants to teach us about getting involved in His Kingdom with our resources. Today we hear more about how ancient Israel came together when a tabernacle needed to be built, and resources needed to be pooled.

How is the economy? In one sense, the economy is very personal. It’s what you have versus what you need, or think you need. In a period of recession, money is on everyone’s mind. Job losses are mounting, foreclosures haunt many neighborhoods. So what does God say about money when it seems the future is getting bleaker all the time?

Is your son or daughter addicted to the internet? He or she may be the unwitting victim of those who seek to ensnare your kids. Chat groups and other web sites lure teens into dangerous relationships that open the door to drugs and sexual promiscuity. Erwin Lutzer sounds the alarm once again on the pervasive battle for the hearts and minds of your children.

It’s not in the news or in the mainstream media, but there is a battle going on that demands our full attention, and full commitment. Independence Day reminds us that America won its freedom. But some in America today are still locked in chains. America’s youth are being targeted by powerful forces bent on their destruction through early addiction to pornography and substance abuse. Today we hear a call for a new Independence Day as parents take back control of the destiny of their children.

On a national election day, character takes first place in the minds of many voters as they choose who will serve in Congress. However, promises made are promises easily broken, since a politician’s first priority is getting re-elected.   Today: some closing thoughts about that elusive quality called integrity as our series on “Who Are You to Judge” concludes.

It is said that the first casualty of war is the truth. That might also apply to politics, where truth is in short supply. A person of integrity runs life’s race without lying, and without ever stretching the truth. If you find a person like this, you have found a rare jewel. Character is vital, and in this message you will hear about more characteristics of a man or woman of integrity.

It is in great demand, but in short supply. It’s easy to spot, but hard to find. That rare “something” is integrity. Like having a sure footing when you run, having integrity means that all is well with both God and man.  People of integrity are honest and forthright, and have the reputations to prove it.
