What are friends for? Hopefully, to be there when you need them. Otherwise, you run life's race as if you're the only one on the track. When you're hit with bad news you can scarcely absorb, a friend can be a great help. However, the friends of Job were scant comfort when he was undergoing his severe trials. Their counsel demonstrated the limits of human understanding.

Human reason: it can only go so far in exploring life's deep issues like "why are we here?," and "why is there suffering?" And when three men pool their ignorance to help a friend in distress, the result can be worse than no help at all. That's what happened to Job. Has it ever happened to you? The book of Job was written to help us understand why the righteous suffer in running their races of life. Here we can find an answer to the burning sense of unfairness we feel when treated unjustly. There are far worse things to lose than one's possessions. Even Job's great faith wilted when he lost his health. First you lose your savings, then your job, then your children. A hurricane destroys a coastal town. Cancer strikes a promising athlete. Bad things happen to good people, and we ask "Why?" Life's race can take tragic turns. Your retirement savings are vaporized by corrupt bankers. Your stock holdings turn to dust. We can be detoured into great sorrow and disappointment. But we must learn, as Job did, that God is still there.

When all is going well, believers have little sense of their need for God. But when calamity strikes, they'll tell a different story. When the economy fractures and your job is lost, finding the reason can be hard if not impossible. When you lose your health, or your child, something inside screams out "Why?" But, as Job of old found out, there is a supreme purpose for suffering.

Your son's on his bike. A distracted driver slams on the brakes...but too late to prevent your son's death. You cry out "why?" Life's race can be hard when the "whys" have no answer. Years can pass, and we're no closer to an answer than when our tragedies took place. A man named Job experienced great suffering, and the book that bears his name can teach us how to suffer as well.

The Bible says that Satan can appear as an angel of light. Indeed, many follow demons when they think they're following God. History will climax in a great struggle of good and evil. The outcome is foreordained: Jesus will return and vanquish Satan, his demons, and all who followed them into believing what the Bible calls The Lie, a lie promoted by media luminaries such as Oprah Winfrey.
