What God Thinks Of The Cross #1 of 3

October 7, 2008
The cross of Christ is the centerpiece of our faith, and the means by which forgiveness comes. It's in the cross that we glory. As we run life's race, our eyes are often drawn to secondary things such as political advantage. In the final analysis, we need to have a clear view of how important the cross really is. Today, we'll learn what God the Father thinks of His Son's cross.

The Vanishing Power Of Death
Death no longer has dominion over the one who follows Christ. When the tomb was found empty, death lost its power. In “The Vanishing Power of Death,” Pastor Lutzer considers the evidence for the resurrection of Christ and its impact on the disciples. From Mary weeping at the tomb, to Thomas' doubting, to Christ's counseling session with two discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus, Pastor Lutzer shows readers that the experiences of the disciples are poignant and relevant for believers today. Is it ever right to do what is wrong? Can believers ever disobey their government? And where do we draw the line on what is right? You've heard it said that oil and water don't mix. They're too different...they cannot work together. It's just like the cross and the flag. We who run life's race need to learn this lesson well: those who mix the cross and any nation's flag do a disservice to both. And for believers, keeping them distinct is the only way to fulfill our prime mission as ambassadors for Christ to a needy world.

We've all heard the call: "Let's take America back!" Some would have us make political salvation our prime religious objective. It may be that some of us as runners in life's race have found a serious detour. There's danger around the bend if we don't get back on the main road. Today: avoiding the temptation to put the cross and the flag on the same level.

The red, white, and blue...we Americans treasure our flag for what it represents. But some think the flag is as important as the cross. When it comes to being citizens of both heaven and earth, believers running the race of life need to keep first things first. Stand by for some flying sparks, as Pastor Erwin Lutzer takes aim at those who equate Old Glory with the one place of true Glory.

There's a great battle going on... a battle that will not cease until the end of this age. It's the clash of cross and culture. As runners in the race of life, believers need to understand the nature of this conflict. As citizens of both heaven and earth, we have obligations to both, obligations we must keep distinct, especially at election time. Today: we'll try to sort it all out.

When culture says one thing, but God says another, whose voice do you heed? There's a great temptation to avoid the conflict. But the cross of Christ is inherently in conflict with our culture...especially these days, as much of the media flaunt immoral behavior as normal. Politicians vie for position on issues the Bible settled long ago. Thankfully, the cross can do what politics can't.

In November, Americans will face a stark choice at the polling booth. The issues are clear and the future is at stake. Many Christians active in politics find themselves increasingly at odds with the culture. That's because the cross of Christ is inherently at odds with our culture. Today we begin a series on Why the Cross Can Do What Politics Can't.
