Togetherness With Christ Part 1

August 3, 2022

In our difficulties, whether physical, emotional, or vocational, we often ask ourselves, “Is Jesus able to meet my need?” Jesus knows not only the demands each day brings but also what’s in our hearts because He is Lord. In this message, we learn with Peter three aspects of Christ’s Lordship over everything. When challenges arise, what truly is our greatest need?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. All of us naturally self-protect, hiding our true selves. Peter could not imagine his Master nailed to a cross and told Him so. Yet Jesus gives a stern rebuke: “Get behind me, Satan!” In this message from Matthew 16, we identify four ways we avoid the cross today. Are we willing to take up our cross, humbly exposing ourselves to God and others?

Sometimes even Christians resist the direction God is pointing. Like Peter advising Jesus to avoid the cross, we attempt to find another way. In this message, we visit three scenes in which Peter unwittingly became a stumbling block to Christ. Let’s consider the costly reality of the cross.

It is acceptable today to think of truth as a personal possession—you have your truth, and I have my truth. But then we hear the jarring claim of Jesus: “I am the truth.” In this message from John 6, we look at Jesus like none other. If truth is not just an opinion but a Person, what does it take to know Him?

In our culture, you can pick and choose the parts of religion that suit you best. But there is only One who has the words of eternal life. No one else has any real answers. In this message, we observe three characteristics of truth from Peter’s defining confession of Jesus Christ. Whatever our needs may be, the answer—the truth—is on offer.

The question is unavoidable: “Who is Jesus?” Some might call Him a liar, a lunatic, or even a legend but following the crowd is not enough. In this message from Matthew 16, we ponder Peter’s acknowledgement of who Jesus is. We have a choice before us as well. Nobody can be neutral about Jesus.

Many people might compliment Jesus as a historical figure or a prophet, but few confess He is God. When Peter confessed Jesus’ divinity and humanity, he was entrusted with the keys to the kingdom. In this message from Matthew 16, we notice three differing opinions about Christ. Whose opinion matters the most?

The storms of life not only occupy our thoughts—we’re often drowned by them. For Peter on the Sea of Galilee, tranquility quickly turned into terrible winds. In this message from Matthew 14, faith comes alive amid upheaval. Let’s learn about Peter’s faith in the Jesus who controls the storm.

Jesus was no ordinary man. He had command of the laws of nature, something Peter and the disciples had never seen or believed possible. In this message, we identify three snapshots of what Peter saw when he stepped out by faith onto the Sea of Galilee. Let’s learn the fundamental lessons of doing the impossible.

We are usually most comfortable with those who are like us or belong to us. But Peter’s journey of faith began when Jesus told him—a fisherman—how to fish. In this message, we learn the power and the command to witness in our offices, our homes, and our communities. If Jesus can draw fish into a net, He can save those even outside our comfort zones!

About 90% of all Christians have never led anyone to saving faith in Jesus Christ. We use excuses like “It’s the wrong time” or “This is the wrong place.” In this message, we hear Jesus’ call to Peter to “fish” for people. You never know whose hearts have been prepared by God. Isn’t it time we trusted God beyond our own experience?
