The Sword of the Spirit #1 of 3

July 22, 2009
There's no doubt: all who name the name of Christ are in a lifelong battle. We share an enemy who never gets tired. That's why we've been given the armor of God: five pieces for defense, and one weapon with which to strike back at Satan. That weapon is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, a weapon that cuts to the very heart of man, convicting of sin and birthing new life.

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. It's tough to not know who your parents are. Many kids are wounded for life by never knowing to whom they belong. It's also tough to grow in the Christian life without the assurance that you are a child of God. Some say salvation can be lost, regained, and then lost again. Today: why it's so crucial to settle the question of knowing you have eternal life.

Many are uncertain if their salvation is a sure thing. Some teach that salvation can be lost if we sin too great. It's tough to go into battle with the devil and not be sure you're on the winning side. God intends for believers to be sure of their eternal futures, and that's why we're told to wear the helmet of salvation as a part of the armor of God. Today: why you and I can be sure of heaven.

We've all heard the phrase, "a mind is a terrible thing to waste." It's also a terrible thing to let fall into Satan's influence. Someone else has said, "What you think, you are." It's vital to protect our minds from the devil's attacks. And the helmet of salvation is just what we need when doubts arise about our status as God's children. Today: how to use yet another piece of the armor of God.

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." By faith we grasp the hand of God. Satan wants to disconnect us from our faith by bombarding us with doubts. The last thing he wants to see is a Christian on fire for the Lord and certain of his or her mission and destiny. Today: how to make the best use of your shield of faith.

In The Lord of the Rings, the evil Grimmer Wormtongue whispers lies into the ears of the King of Rohan. He's just like Satan, who whispers lies into our ears. His goal: to make us ineffective as soldiers in the battle for truth. The shield of faith is what we need when beset with thoughts like "I'm no good...I can't live for God...it's too hard." Today: learning to use your shield.

There are times in the life of every believer when things get so bad that we doubt God's care. That's when Satan strikes. Flaming arrows come our way challenging our faith, making us question if God is truly good. Flaming arrows...that's the image the Bible uses when describing the attacks of the devil on believers who want to live for God. There is a defense Christians can use to ward off Satan's fiery darts. Some think peace is just the absence of conflict. But God can give us inner calm even when the world is topsy-turvy. Jesus knew His disciples would face extreme trials. Most would die as martyrs after suffering great persecution. The peace He left them is one of the weapons in the armor of God, a weapon we're told to wear as shoes. So, how's your peace today?

Taking the gospel of peace to a world under Satan's dominion: that's a sure way to find yourself immediately at war. The devil sets his sights on any believer obeying the command to take the gospel to another person. Only by having the peace of God within, can that believer withstand the attacks of Satan from without. Today: more from Paul's teaching on the armor of God - our equipment for victory.
