The Light Shines On Idols Part 1

October 17, 2022

The Gospel is controversial, impacting even culture and business. The early church at Ephesus stood against worshiping the goddess Artemis, which affected the city’s silversmith business. In this message, we assess how the Ephesian church was founded and developed. What happens if idolatry destroys a church’s first love?

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. How do our vocations bring glory to God? In ancient Corinth, Paul and his friends exemplified the Gospel in the work of their hands. In this message, we learn further truths from Corinth about facing opposition to the Gospel. When doctors, lawyers, teachers, and businesspeople live out the Gospel with integrity, the world is turned upside down.

Where churches once flourished, many have been replaced with mosques or have been destroyed. Yet in the godless city of Corinth, Paul laid a healthy foundation for a lasting church. In this message, we hear three ways we can minimize the foundation of the Gospel. We cannot presume that any given congregation will continue.

How do we shine the light of Christ in a complex culture? Paul used the beliefs and culture of the Athenians to explain the real God, the real essence of man, and the very real need of salvation Christ offers. In this message, we explore three responses to the Gospel. In the power of the Spirit, we can shine like Paul did on Mars Hill.

Where can we find God amid our heartaches and tragedies? The Apostle Paul told the Athenians, in a city saturated with idols, that the one true God is not far from us. In this message, we identify three responses to the Gospel. The reactions are mixed—much as it is today in our idol-saturated culture.

The explosive power of the Gospel was felt in the world of the first century. The Holy Spirit began convicting of sin, causing a fearful jailer to ask, “What must I do to be saved?” In this message, we unlock two motivations to witness for Christ: faith and joy. The Gospel can change any heart—like a prison door flinging open.

How do we share the good news in hostile places? Because Paul and Silas believed the Gospel was the power of God, they weren’t intimidated in new territory. In this message from Acts 16, we discover three conditions of our hearts, much like the Philippians—the first converts in Europe. Even in the darkest of places, we can have faith and courage.

When we pray for an hour by ourselves, we’re not actually alone. In Gethsemane, Jesus asked the disciples to pray with Him. They fell asleep. In this message, we consider anew how to face the struggles we have today in praying with Christ. How can we lay ahold of the privilege of prayer before the throne of grace?

If it’s true that our schedules reflect our priorities, how important is God to us? In the garden of Gethsemane, the disciple’s fell asleep, causing the Savior to ask, “Could you not pray with Me for one hour?” In this message, we ponder four questions to guide us in praying with Christ for an hour of time. Let’s pray fervently, not wasting the time we have.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, globalization is not what it was. How do we interpret the developments of compromised national borders, technological advances in A.I., and economic shifts? In this interview, Pastor Erwin Lutzer rethinks Christian suffering amid a global reset. Like our heroes of the faith, there is still “No Reason to Hide.”

Language can be misused to censor thought or even to shape our view of reality. As the church responds to propaganda, the rise of LGBTQ and preferred pronouns, as well as the faith deconstruction movement, we must speak the truth in love. In this interview, Pastor Erwin Lutzer exhorts us to speak up, taking the consequences. We cannot live by lies.
