The Light Shines in Corinth #3 of 4

September 6, 2010
Often a great way to present the gospel is to just live it out before your co-workers. That is what Paul did. While living in Corinth, he plied his trade of tentmaking, and taught in the local synagogue. Through his efforts a church was born, a church that later received two epistles we still read in the New Testament. Today we listen as the power of the gospel extends further into ancient Greece.

Imagine you are a missionary, and you have been sent to a city where the gospel has never been heard. How would you begin? One thing is clear: a wishy-washy message would not get you far. What you would need is a transforming message, laden with the power of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul knew this. Also, he knew the message he bore would transform the lives of all who believed.

If you want to visit a place where the Apostle Paul was known to have preached, go to Greece and visit modern-day Corinth. Ask for directions to the ancient original city, and you will find an amazing excavation of the very streets and buildings that Paul saw when he first brought the gospel to this crossroads of the ancient world. Today we will watch as God opens hearts to the gospel in yet another place.

The gospel began in Israel, but quickly spread as the Apostles fanned out with their Master’s message of redemption. Paul became the Apostle to the Gentiles, and moved aggressively to cities in Greece and beyond with the power of the Spirit directing his energies and birthing faith wherever he preached. Today we will see that power on display atop a famous hill in a city known for its philosophers.

When we witness to people about Jesus, how do we relate to them? Paul taught us how to do it in Acts chapter 17. The Apostle quickly found out where they were coming from, and focused his message on what they already knew. His audience on Mars Hill was made up of philosophers: lovers of wisdom. He directed attention to their monument to an unknown God.

The Hill of Ares in Athens is a mound of granite facing the famous Acropolis with its temples to pagan gods. At this hill, Paul the Apostle presented the gospel with power to a group of philosophers who enjoyed argument.   Little did they know that they were watching the beginning of a spiritual tidal wave that would engulf the known world of their time. Today: what happened at a hill also known as Mars Hill.

Acts 16:31 is a well-known verse in which Paul answers a jailer’s question: “How can I be saved?” “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, you and your household.” Some see in this verse a promise that all in a family will come to faith. Today, on the 4,000th consecutive broadcast of Running to Win, we’ll see what this passage actually means.

Jailers know that locks usually stay locked. But when Paul and Silas were sprung from prison, one jailer learned otherwise. The explosive power of the gospel was beginning to be felt in the world of the first century. The Holy Spirit began convicting of sin, causing a fearful jailer to ask, “What must I do to be saved?” Today, more on prison doors flinging open, and faith being birthed anew.

The Apostle Paul received a vision calling him to preach in Macedonia, and immediately he set out to obey that vision. With him were Silas and Timothy, and their first stop was at Philippi. The power of the spirit was in evidence as people readily responded to Paul’s message. Among those who believed was a merchant woman whose heart had been prepared by God.

Sometimes we think the gospel is a matter of persuading people to consider Christ. Today, we’ll find it’s much more. The Bible calls the gospel “the power of God.” That word “power” in Greek is the word that gives us “dynamite” in English.” That power began to be felt in the early church, and today we’ll begin tracing the impact the gospel made in the first century.

There’s more to life than grabbing all the gusto you can. When he obeyed God, the Apostle Paul found himself in prison. For believers on the racetrack of life, there is no guarantee of a bed of ease. A life of servanthood is what lies before us, a life like the life Jesus lived. Are you ready to embrace the Disciplines That Grow Godliness?
