The Light Shines in a Prison #3 of 4

August 26, 2010
Jailers know that locks usually stay locked. But when Paul and Silas were sprung from prison, one jailer learned otherwise. The explosive power of the gospel was beginning to be felt in the world of the first century. The Holy Spirit began convicting of sin, causing a fearful jailer to ask, “What must I do to be saved?” Today, more on prison doors flinging open, and faith being birthed anew.

The Eclipse Of God
Just as the moon obscures the sun’s light during an eclipse, today’s radical secularism has obscured the light of God. But God’s light still shines—and He is calling us to shine His light in our growing darkness. Is God more tolerant than He used to be? Pastor Lutzer shows how God is both a God of wrath as well as grace; that He is both merciful and just, and both a redeemer and a judge. Deepen your love for our unchangeable God of the Bible and be empowered to proclaim the light of truth in a culture of darkness. The Apostle Paul received a vision calling him to preach in Macedonia, and immediately he set out to obey that vision. With him were Silas and Timothy, and their first stop was at Philippi. The power of the spirit was in evidence as people readily responded to Paul’s message. Among those who believed was a merchant woman whose heart had been prepared by God.

Sometimes we think the gospel is a matter of persuading people to consider Christ. Today, we’ll find it’s much more. The Bible calls the gospel “the power of God.” That word “power” in Greek is the word that gives us “dynamite” in English.” That power began to be felt in the early church, and today we’ll begin tracing the impact the gospel made in the first century.

There’s more to life than grabbing all the gusto you can. When he obeyed God, the Apostle Paul found himself in prison. For believers on the racetrack of life, there is no guarantee of a bed of ease. A life of servanthood is what lies before us, a life like the life Jesus lived. Are you ready to embrace the Disciplines That Grow Godliness?

Being a winning athlete means getting knocked around a lot. Most sports take quite a physical toll on those who strive for victory. It’s no different in the race of life. It’s only through some hard knocks that we learn to help others face their hard knocks. Learning to endure hardness was advice Paul gave, advice you and I need to hear in this age of self-gratification.

Many American Christians want what everybody else wants, success and security. Few want to take a towel to wash someone’s feet. Being a servant goes against our grain. But, in God’s eyes, it’s the servants who win in the race of life. Everybody likes servants as long as they don’t have to be servants. Ready for a paradigm shift? Today we will explore “The Discipline of Servanthood.”

Facing a delicious turkey dinner, the last thing you’d think about is fasting. But there are times when fasting is what we must do. Sometimes we find ourselves in spiritual warfare, and only through fasting can victories be won. It was true for Jesus, and it’s certainly true for us. Today we will learn why fasting can help open the door to a deep work of God in your life.

There are times to feast, holiday times, times of celebration. But in the plan of God, there are also times to fast. Some of the tough laps in life’s race require the spiritual discipline of fasting. We see this in Jesus’ own 40-day example in the wilderness. Fasting is avoiding food altogether in order to rely on God for strength. That’s what Jesus needed. Could it be what you need as well?

Many of us don’t think twice about grabbing a Big Mac, large fries and a Coke at lunchtime. After all, when hungry, eat! But in God’s rules for the race of life, there are times to bypass the Golden Arches, and even bypass food altogether. Have you ever fasted for several days to deepen your prayer life? Before you say “you’ve got to be kidding,” listen to this message.

Old, cranky Ebenezer Scrooge is literature’s ultimate miser. But from God’s perspective, how many of us are any better? The love of money can ruin our race of life. Knowing how to be generous frees us from the tyranny of our possessions. Generosity is one of the five disciplines that helps us grow godliness, and today, generosity is our focus.

For some in America, it’s totally acceptable to pursue money. Sports and media figures exemplify the accumulation of material wealth. But money can weigh us down in the race of life. Worse, it can turn our hearts away from God and toward pursuing even more money and the things it buys. God has some words to say to the rich, words you’ll hear on today’s Running to Win.
