The Lie That God Helps Those Who Help Themselves, Part 4 of 4 (Ten Lies About God)

August 31, 2018

Only God has the power needed to raise sinners from the dead and give them new life. It’s a myth that humanity can contribute to salvation, and if believed, that lie has eternal consequences. Spiritual life comes only from God.

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. The Bible says that only God’s righteousness opens heaven’s doors. That’s why we’re deceived if we believe that “God helps those who help themselves.” We need the righteousness that comes from God alone.

Many people think that “God helps those who help themselves.” But when it comes to salvation, we must understand what God really says. The truth is that we can’t help ourselves. Only He can save.

Long-term financial gain is often short-circuited when investors go for short-term profits. The same is true in life. Going for immediate pleasures can short-circuit our potential to enjoy the overwhelming pleasures of God.

The good news: God wants you to experience pleasure. The bad news: many of us don’t know what real pleasures are. Those who think sin opens pleasure’s door have no idea what satisfaction God wants to give His children.

We’ve all been tempted to think that being a Christian means that we miss out on “all the fun.” That’s a complete lie, and we need to combat it, especially since even some Christians fall prey to this deception.

The problem of evil is perhaps the hardest issue facing theologians. Clearly, God could prevent evil, but He often doesn’t. War and suffering must be part of His plan, even though He isn’t the immediate cause of those events. How should we face these truths?

We all wrestle with the problem of evil. If God is in charge, why is there so much suffering? Asking these questions put us into some really deep waters. We must seek God’s wisdom as we ponder the complexity of the problem of evil.

Did the Fall ruin God’s plans? The answer must be “no,” because nothing can ruin the plans of the God who created and rules over all things. What are the implications for you and me?
