Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. The dead in Christ will rise first when Jesus returns to the earth. They will meet Jesus in the air, to be joined by those who are alive at the time of His coming. Our bodies will become immortal when the King returns for us.

Somewhere a “doomsday clock” supposedly measures how close we are to annihilating ourselves, and it claims that it is almost midnight. But as Christians, we can anticipate the end of days with hope. When the time’s up, Jesus will return to the earth and take charge.

The parables of Jesus cut to the deepest level of human motivation. In the story of the rich fool, greed was one issue—covetousness was another. None of us is free from the grip of wanting more. This sin keeps us from seeing what’s truly important: where we spend eternity.

Are you looking forward to the new heavens and earth? Our earthly possessions pale in comparison to that perfectly recreated world. It really is true: you can’t take it with you. So why are we so consumed with possessions and wealth? Jesus told a story about a man of great riches who lost it all—even his life. His passion for wealth proved meaningless. Will the priorities that absorb your life last into eternity?

In a shaky market, people wonder where to invest their money. Jesus taught a lesson on ultimate investments. He counsels believers to invest in God’s kingdom, because only in eternity will the true interest rate be on display.

A wealthy man decided to fire a manager. So the manager cut some deals with the master’s debtors to gain favor—to have options once his job ended. Jesus made this story into a parable about investments. But why did Christ commend a man who acted improperly?

In Luke 14, Jesus told a story of a lavish banquet. The invited guests all had other things to do, so the man giving the banquet brought in the poor and the crippled—those who would never expect such a gift. This parable shows us how to approach people with the gift of the gospel.

Jesus told a parable about a man hosting a banquet. When the invited guests gave excuses and refused to attend, the host invited anyone he could find to sit at his table. God seeks the lost just like this man sought people to feed. We too should reach people who need the gospel.

A master gave three servants money to invest. Jesus said that two of them made substantial returns and were rewarded. The third hid his money in a piece of cloth and felt the wrath of his master. This parable compares money with the way we spread the gospel. Will we be faithful with the good news?

How we handle the small tasks of today is vitally important. It affects whether we’re given a larger task to perform—and enjoy the rewards that go with it. In Luke 19, Jesus taught about faithfulness and the perils of unfaithfulness.
