The Hurt And Healing Of Abuse Part 1

February 17, 2023

Abuse takes many forms—physical, verbal, sexual. The abuser can be a parent, partner, teacher, coach, or friend. In this message from Luke 4, we consider how Jesus can free the brokenhearted from the destructive control, power, and authority of an abuser. Healing is not an instant event, but it is possible.

People enslaved to their addictions feel hopeless. Apart from an encounter with God, we cannot ultimately break free from our destructive behavior. In this message from 1 Corinthians 6, we declare God’s good news for the addict—"such were some of you.” Are we willing to trust God to do what we can’t?

Many addicts say they can stop anytime they want. Yet at its core, addiction is compulsive, destructive sin. In this message, we mark the downward slide into addiction and the secret chains that keep us there. We must not avoid the personal responsibility which leads to true deliverance in Christ.

In the battle for our minds, psychiatric support cannot always deal with the root issues of our fantasies or obsessions. It’s time we took proactive steps to defend our thinking from Satan’s delusions. In this message, we not only identify the enemy but also our God-given weapons in the war for our souls. Can we be set free from captivity in our minds?

The battle for our mind is an ongoing war. Our mind is like a fortress, under siege by two enemies: Satan and our sinful nature. In this message from 2 Corinthians 10, we prepare a strategy to fight the enemy without and within. The enemy of our souls wants nothing less than to control what we think about.

Many Christians are weighed down with sins and addictions they cannot seem to stop committing. But our feelings of disappointment and shame don’t need to control us. In this message, we consider four truths to lead us out of the wilderness of shame. What if we can’t forgive ourselves?

Many of us live with low-grade depression and a sense of condemnation. Can any of us sin too greatly to ever find forgiveness? In this message, we clarify what Jesus said about the nature of the “unpardonable sin.” Though our pasts remind us of failure and defeat, there is a way out.

Too many Christians are nursing past wounds, afraid to let the secrets out. Yet like a skilled surgeon, God can create a clean wound that will heal properly and fully. In this message from 1 Corinthians 10:13, we process three characteristics of the way of escape. How do we find healing from our past?

Can any of us start over again with a new beginning? Too many of us are burdened with guilt, living lives of quiet desperation for the sins of our past. In this message from 1 Corinthians 10:13, we recognize three links that hold us captive and three assurances that break us free. We can escape from our personal prisons.

There’s no one too far gone for God, even when we are determined to hold out. In Luke 15, the prodigal son ran to the “far country,” blowing away his inheritance. In this message, we glean hope from real life stories of prodigals. What does it take for a prodigal to reverse directions?
February 6, 2023
Even a loved and nurtured child can grow up to be a prodigal. When we are living in sin, we become lost in an illusion of control. In this message, we count the steps that take prodigals in the wrong direction. Jesus’ story of the original prodigal can bring hope to anyone far from God.
