The High Cost Of Lost Opportunities, Part 1 of 2 (Single Sermon)

April 6, 2020

Some opportunities have a limited time window. Jesus offered Himself to the nation Israel when entering Jerusalem on a donkey. They rejected Him, and the city was later destroyed. The triumphal entry of Christ was both a joyous and a solemn occasion, and we need to understand the high cost of lost opportunities.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. In Gethsemane, Jesus roused His sleeping disciples, asking, “Could you not pray with Me one hour?” In this message, each of us is asked the same question. Will we covenant to set aside one hour a week for Jesus?

If you visit Gethsemane, you can see the ancient olive trees. It is a place for tears. There in the garden, Jesus asked the disciples to pray with Him. They fell asleep, causing the Savior to ask, “Could you not watch with Me one hour?”

While on earth, Jesus chose to veil His glory and limit His options. And that’s the key to how we can bring His message to the lost. As we learn why the cross can do what politics can’t, we’ll also find out how to effectively take the cross into the world.

There is a basic dilemma in evangelism. The world thinks the cross we preach is foolishness, but to us, it is the power of God. So how do we bring the message of the cross to a rejecting world? When we begin to imitate the attitude of Christ, in both humility and suffering, we can make the Gospel of God known in the world.

Americans are adrift in a sea of moral relativism. We need a moral compass. The cross of Christ is that compass, and the church must live by the cross if our culture is to survive. Let’s help the world by first calling the church back to the cross of Christ.

A culture that rejects Christ is a culture that creates its own standard for moral choices. This moral standard influences our vote, which then determines our nation’s destiny. So, where does true morality come from?

Many who seek justice call for “a level playing field” of opportunity. There is one place where the field is level, and that is at the foot of the cross of Christ. This cross is the only basis for reconciling people of different racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.

Many of today’s conflicts stem from deep-rooted racial or ethnic strife. It seems there is no human solution in our institutions, systems, and even homes, but there is a divine solution. There is a place of common ground for those who cannot stand the sight of each other.

On the day that Jesus died just outside of Jerusalem, many people passed by, as many do today, without realizing the eternal consequences of what was happening on that cruel Roman cross. It may seem unjust to our finite minds, but it was because of God’s love that Jesus suffered.

As we run life’s race, let us not forget that mercy is not getting what you deserve. God was not obligated to save any of us, and yet He has. When skeptics question God’s love, we must point them first to the cross where the Son of God suffered and died—for us.
