The Handwriting on the Wall, Part 3 of 3 (The Church in Babylon)

May 23, 2018

Ancient Babylon’s leaders had no idea that their time was up. A festive party ended in the king’s death, and God’s judgment was served. Modern America also has no idea how many minutes are left on its ticking clock. Is there handwriting on the wall for us?

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. When God says a nation is doomed, that doom is certain. Belshazzar’s feast began with revelry and ended with Belshazzar dead. Babylon died with him, as might America if we don’t heed the warnings of God.

The judgment of God may be long in coming, but it can come with a vengeance. For ancient Babylon, that time came when Daniel foretold the doom of Babylon’s king. We in America should take heed, as his story might well be ours.

When the government tells you whom to worship, believers face an easy choice. The answer is simply “no, we will worship God.” Then we, like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, have to be willing to face the consequences, whether God delivers us or not.

During persecution, some believers are spared while others go through torture and death. Some wonder why God doesn’t deliver all of His people, since He surely could. In this message we find the answer to a vexing problem we all face as we try to understand God.

Kings can get very mad when disobeyed. Daniel’s friends said “no” to Babylon’s king, and then were thrown into a fiery furnace. God does not always deliver his people from harm, but this time He did. And one king found out who was really in charge.

Every day, government pressure mounts on the Christian faith. How should believers react? We can look to a similar time of hardship long ago for guidance. The place was Babylon, and the minority Jews were facing government oppression.

Daniel’s friends went along with their Babylonian captors, but drew the line when their consciences told them to say “no.” Some life situations force us to make tough choices. In this message we learn how to live by the Bible’s principles when facing hard decisions.

When the government says do one thing, and the Bible tells us to do the opposite, what do we do? The answers are not always clear, since we are called to obey those who rule over us. How four men handled this in ancient Babylon can give us guidance.

Christians in America are rapidly becoming like Daniel and his friends in Babylon—out of sync with their pagan environment. How do we reconcile what we believe with what we have to do to live in such a culture? In this message we look for the answers.

God told His people in the Babylonian captivity to have large families and support the country they lived in. Could this be a blueprint for how American believers should react to increasing hostility? In this message we find important lessons from Jeremiah chapter 29.
