The Discipline of Generosity #4 of 4

August 13, 2010
Old, cranky Ebenezer Scrooge is literature’s ultimate miser. But from God’s perspective, how many of us are any better? The love of money can ruin our race of life. Knowing how to be generous frees us from the tyranny of our possessions. Generosity is one of the five disciplines that helps us grow godliness, and today, generosity is our focus.

For some in America, it’s totally acceptable to pursue money. Sports and media figures exemplify the accumulation of material wealth. But money can weigh us down in the race of life. Worse, it can turn our hearts away from God and toward pursuing even more money and the things it buys. God has some words to say to the rich, words you’ll hear on today’s Running to Win.

Money…..a sensitive subject for those believers who’ve adopted the world’s ethic that accumulating wealth is an end in itself. In the race of life, God wants us to discipline ourselves in many ways, not the least of which is to learn to be generous with the funds He has provided. When we do this, these funds will lose their grip on our greedy hearts, and help advance God’s kingdom.

You can tell where a Christian’s values lie by examining his or her giving. One hallmark of a true believer is generosity. It’s a touchy subject, but we’re not afraid to hit the nail on the head as we focus on another of the spiritual disciplines that strengthen us in the race of life. Today we will look at what God wants you to do with the resources He has provided.

As a military man, Joshua knew how to wage war. But as a man of God, he needed quiet time to gain strength for the battle. For Joshua, and for us, meditation in the word of God builds faith. Meditation involves analyzing the scripture, asking three questions: what does it teach me about God, what does it tell me to do, and what promises can I claim?

At times during the race of life, the winds of change swirl, almost blowing us off the track. We need stability. Meditation in the word of God provides that still point in a turning world. Today we discuss teaching from the book of Joshua on how meditation in the word of God can give us inner resources to face whatever comes our way. How still is your heart as you run your race?

Mention “meditation” to some and they envision an Eastern mystic sitting in a lotus position. But real meditation is far different. Running the race of life requires inner strength, strength forged through spiritual disciplines. Today we will explore the second of Dr. Erwin Lutzer’s five Disciplines That Grow Godliness, and hear what God had to say to Joshua about meditation.

A lazy athlete is a losing athlete. Only disciplined athletes win. The same is true for any of us running the race of life. The disciplines that bring us victory include the discipline of worship: putting God in His rightful first place in our hearts, and making everything else a distant second place. Today you will hear several practical ways to make worship the center of your life.

A woman sat near an ancient well, face to face with Jesus. Their discussion turned from physical water to spiritual water, and her journey in the race of life was changed forever as she learned the meaning of true worship. Why it’s vital to worship the God who desires our adoration: the discipline of worship is our focus on today’s broadcast.

The winning athlete is invariably the one who understands discipline, taking the right steps to insure victory. Just as it takes discipline to win at the track, you can be sure it takes discipline to win in the race of life. Today, Dr. Erwin Lutzer begins a series exploring five “Disciplines That Grow Godliness.” Are you ready to get into the real game?

When you give to support your local church, do you wish you could attach strings to your dollars, and control where they go? Some would rather give to high visibility ministries than to help provide for the general needs of their church. Today, Erwin Lutzer tells why letting God supervise the use of the money we give creates a strong base for the many outreaches that our churches accomplish.
