May 21, 2009
Ever met a destroyer...someone who can inflict tremendous hurt without feeling any guilt? Sadly, destroyers are everywhere. They're really tuned in to their own pain, but are incapable of caring whether their victims are in pain or not. Destroyers are nothing new...in fact, the first destroyer was born into mankind's first family. Today: we'll learn what motivates destroyers.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Trying to predict all the effects of being offended is like predicting where all the waves will go when you toss a rock into a pond. When we react to an offense, some collateral damage is very likely. Today: join us for an eye-opening look into the unintended consequences of harboring an offense rather than seeking reconciliation.

In Spain, bullfighters wave red flags to get the bulls to charge, thus we say we're "seeing red" when really angry. And nothing gets us madder than being offended by another person. When someone does us wrong, we can lose our focus on everything except the rage we feel within. Today: more lessons on the roots of rage, and how to handle it.

It's instinctive to recoil from pain. Just watch what happens when you stick a friend with a pin. But then there's inner pain. Some conflict in life is inevitable, but when others cause our conflicts, it's hard to escape that pain. Something inside each of us cries out for justice. Today, we're beginning a series to help us deal with the wrongs that others inflict.

It may be that church in America has never been as rich in wealth, while at the same time as poor in spiritual power. This indictment was handed down by Jesus to the ancient church at Laodicea. He may have had our day in mind when he said, "Because you say I'm rich...you don't know that you are wretched, miserable, blind and naked." What's his remedy?

No one likes lukewarm food or drink. Hot or cold is much better. Jesus said as much when evaluating a local church. He had strong words for the lukewarm Laodicean church in Revelation chapter three. But his tough love included a gracious offer: a way for them to regain their lost fervor. His rebuke and chastening would lead to renewal and power...for them, and for us.

Some Bible scholars see a progression as Jesus evaluates seven successive churches in the book of Revelation. They see the passing of history, with each church representing an era of time. If so, we may be in the last era, part of a church Jesus says he will spew out of his mouth. Is your church spiritually hot, or, like the one at Laodicea, merely lukewarm?

When churches check themselves out against those listed in Revelation chapters two and three, there's one church they want to be like.... The church at Philadelphia earned high marks from Jesus for its faithfulness and its vision. They persevered, they kept his word, and they never denied his name. Today: a look at the importance of vision, and going through the open doors Jesus sets before us.

In what is now Turkey, the ancient church at Philadelphia earned the commendation of Jesus for its faithfulness to his name. And today, faithful churches are growing even in hostile places...churches about which Jesus says "I've set before you an open door, and no one can shut it." Some even come to faith in Christ through dreams which lead them to seek out God's word.

Every Christian longs to hear "well done" when he or she stands before Jesus one day. The same applies to the local church. Jesus addressed seven local churches in the book of Revelation. Often, his words were sharp. But to one church, they were glowing. Today, we'll see why this church was praised, and how churches today can hear those same words of commendation.

In the final analysis, it won't matter whether you were rich or poor, famous or unknown. Only one thing will matter...whether you as a believer were an overcomer. Jesus makes that clear in his analysis of seven local churches in the book of Revelation. Those who overcome will be given white garments, because Jesus will say they are worthy.
