Running To Win

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

The Casualty Of Mankind #3 of 3

July 17, 2008
God could have left mankind in the misery of rebellion, but chose to extend His grace by giving fallen man a Savior. Like a life-preserver to a drowning swimmer, there is a way of salvation from the rightful penalty of our sins. As we explore the big picture of God's purposes, we come today to God's answer for man's dilemma.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. They say that hindsight is 20-20. If only we could see the consequences of our choices before we make them: but we cannot. Neither could Satan, who made the biggest miscalculation of all time. Luring Eve with a bite of fruit has led to horrific results down through the annals of history. Today, a look at what happened after the fall of man.

Rebellion: it is like a disease. We caught it from Satan, and now a drop of his rebellion is found in every human heart. His words to Eve aroused the same pride that caused his fall eons earlier. The first humans joined Satan in rebellion against their Creator. The sad results are all around us: death, and separation from God. Is there a solution?

Some call it the law of unintended consequences. This is certain: one day, Satan will reap what he never intended to sow. His great gamble of turning traitor to God has resulted in devastation on earth, and, for him, it will mean eternity in a burning lake. Where do you and I fit in? Stay with us.

Nothing is worse for a track star than to slip and fall during a race. Your pride is probably more wounded than your body. Interestingly, it was pride that caused the greatest angel ever created to trip and fall big time. In rebelling against God, Lucifer took millions of other angels with him. For the full story, stay with us.

Why would God's number one angel decide to turn traitor, knowing he could never defeat his all-powerful Creator? It is a mystery that Pastor Lutzer dares to probe, and a mystery that goes a long way toward explaining all the evil around us these days. For a look back, and I mean way back, stay with us.

Do you ever stop long enough to ask, "Why am I here? Where am I going? What is it all about, anyway?" If not, stop now. Take a break from the rat race to think about why you are running. For believers, there is a big picture view that puts everything in perspective, that makes sense out of seeming chaos. Want to know more? Stay with us.

Only when men took their first steps into space did we realize how little we are, and how big the universe really is. We sent our frail bodies roaring aloft in cylinders of metal to protect us from the ferocious extremes of space. More than one astronaut remarked how beautiful the earth looks from orbit. A planet designed by God for you and me.

Sometimes we cannot see the forest for the trees. Once in a while, it is good to pull back the lens and get a wide-angle view. For believers in the race of life, a good question might be, "Just where did this track begin? What was it like before the earth was created?" If you wonder about these things, stay with us.

To many, God seems capricious. He heals some, but lets others die. Some get great wealth; others starve. Running life's race means understanding that faith in God lets God set the priorities. Trusting Him does not mean we will always get what we want. Today: developing a faith not based on the here and now.
July 4, 2008
Some people pray and God moves mightily. Others pray and God does not come to their aid. One might ask, "Why pray?" As we run the race of life we need to understand the nature of faith as "the substance of things unseen." Today, developing a faith that is not dependent on what we can see.
