Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

The Canon of the Bible #3 of 3

September 22, 2008
To many people, the Bible is something you put your hand on to be sworn into office. Beyond that, it's just Jewish myths and moral teaching. But the sixty-six books that make up our Bible contain powerful, life-changing truth, thanks to the God who made sure we're reading what He intended.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. If you trust your eternal destiny to the writings in an ancient book, it's reasonable to ask if that book is trustworthy. In the case of the Bible, the answer is "yes," especially in terms of which writings made it into the book, a set of documents we call the canon of scripture. To learn more, stay with us.

If the Bible was written by some 40 authors over a period of 1,600 years, the book we hold today had to have a serious editor. Where did the Bible come from? Who picked what writings got in, and which were rejected? Today: the bottom line on how God superintended the Bible's contents. To learn more, stay with us.

Our minds cannot grasp the immensity of the universe, let alone explain where it came from. Creation displays the glory of God and the Bible's simple, profound account of creation stands unchallenged as the only rational explanation for it all. Today: why creation validates the truth of the Bible.

Despite the evidence, most scientists reject a Divine Hand in creation because that Divine Hand would hold them morally accountable. As one scientist said, "We can't let God get a foot in the door." Well, His foot is not only in the door, He created the door. Today: why creation shouts the truth of the Bible.

Thanks to the space program, astronomers know a great deal about what is "out there." But they can't tell us how it all "got there." The tough thing for scientists is facing the question of Ultimate Cause. Only by revelation can we touch the infinite and learn the answer. Today: the Bible sheds light on how it all came to be.

Would Jesus knowingly tell a lie? Even the most liberal theologian or scholar would have trouble saying "yes" to that question. So when Jesus repeatedly affirms the accuracy of the Old Testament scriptures, we either believe Him, or reject what He says and the Bible He quotes. Today: facing up to the Christ of the Bible.

Time and again, Jesus referred to Old Testament events as historical facts. If you believe Him, you must believe the Old Testament. Many who doubt the scriptures need to deal with the Christ who had no doubts about them. Today: more about the Christ who believed what the scriptures said.

Although modern scholars try to demean Jesus, few say He was a bad man. Most look to Him as at least a good moral teacher and so to scholars, Christ's opinion of the Bible should be at least worth considering. Today: how Jesus treated the scriptures, and, in view of that, how we also should treat them.

Major news magazines report that Jesus only said 18 percent of what the Bible says He said. No miracles...just a man. The Christ of the Bible, though, is a far-different figure. The Christ of the Bible changes lives, as millions can attest. Today: why the Bible's picture of Christ validates its truth and authority.

Most so-called prophets bathe their predictions in mystery and allegory. Few name names and places like the Bible does. Nostradamus never predicted the death of a great city the way the Bible tells of ancient Tyre's judgment. Today: why fulfilled prophecy means you can trust the Bible to be true even in the details.
