The Ascent Into Glory #3 of 3

February 7, 2008
Most of us have some fear of death. But the Bible paints some lovely pictures of what happens when a Christian dies. It is like folding your tent and leaving the campground. It is like weighing anchor and setting sail for home. Today: a final picture of a Christian's death...what a believer in Christ can look forward to in that transition from shadows to sunlight.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. How long does it take to get from earth to heaven? When a Christian dies, is there a waiting period before entering eternal rest? Some say the soul sleeps until the last judgment. Dr. Lutzer says otherwise. Today: more about a Christian's "ascent into glory," and what a believer can expect the moment he passes from this life into the next.

At the end of the movie Star Wars, the heroes walk through a standing ovation to receive their rewards as thousands cheer. But that is not close to what it will be like when a Christian enters heaven. Truly, "eye hath not seen" what lies ahead for believers. For a look beyond the mystery of death, stay with us.

The last thing we plan for is our own funeral. Even though death is more certain than taxes, many of us act like we will live forever. But Jesus told of a man in torment after death, a man who begged for another chance, not for himself, but for his relatives. What lessons can we take from this chilling story?

If you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, turn to Luke chapter 16. Here you will find out what will happen to you when you die. A man cries in pain, begging to be able to contact his loved ones and tell them to repent, lest they join him in suffering a just judgment. The answer: "no." Today: a sober look at a future no one would want if they knew it was coming.

Most of us are too busy to think about our own deaths, but each of us has an appointment we cannot avoid. We must be ready. Runners in life's race know that one day the race will be over. Those who run best already know where their track ends. Today: more teaching from the Bible about where unbelievers will spend their eternities.

It may surprise you to learn that no one is in hell today. Hell is empty, awaiting the arrival of another place called Hades. Hades is where unbelievers go when they die, and one day, Hades will be thrown into hell. Today: a look at the Bible's teaching about the ultimate fate of people who never trusted Christ for salvation.

For many, death is a fearful mystery. Some take comfort in reports of lights at the end of the tunnel...but those lights can be demonic. Taking the Bible at face value offers the truth about the great mystery of death. Since "it is appointed unto man once to die, and after this, the judgment," we are going to see what the Bible says will happen "One Minute After You Die."
January 29, 2008
Is there an explanation for the similarity of peoples' stories about near-death experiences? Dr. Lutzer says "yes." Those lights at the end of the tunnel may not be what they seem. As believers, we need God's revelation on what happens after death. And God has given us that revelation in His word.

Some people who have been near death and back report a strange, inviting light beckoning them to cross through the door. But is that light what it seems to be? How seriously should we take the revelations of those in the twilight between life and death? We need to know, since one day, we too will pass beyond this life and face what lies on the other side.
January 25, 2008
You never know when death will come, but what happens "One Minute After You Die?" Nothingness?...A strange light?...Another dimension?...Or eternity?
