Seeking The Lost #1 of 3

March 11, 2008
Many runners seek fame, fortune, or the glory of Olympic gold. Christians running life's race have a different motive. Believers run to please Jesus, the "Author and Finisher" of their faith. They want to advance His kingdom, and bring people to know Him personally. So, what is involved in seeking the lost?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. The race of life often takes Christians into the heart of town. And as believers follow Christ there, amazing things can happen. When Jesus comes to town, revival often follows. People are convicted of sin, restitution is made, and spiritual life flows where it never had before. Has Jesus come to your town?

As a believer, you run life's race on a track made just for you. Your road is not always easy, but it's end is sure. We get to the goal by faithfully following Christ, whose life was lived to minister to people. And taking His gospel to those needy people is our primary reason for running the race.

Many of the major figures in the Scriptures spent a lot of time in the desert. Here, God could get their full attention. The Apostle Paul and even Christ Himself found strength and direction in a place we would call inhospitable. We are finding that the desert is really not an option...all of us need to get used to sand.

If you think that trusting Christ guarantees that all of your pathways will be strewn with roses, you might want to think again. Many of Christ's paths were paths of suffering. If we are serious about following Him, sooner or later we will find ourselves leaving the oasis and heading into the wilderness...and God does this for a reason.

Not all of life's roads take us through pleasant places. Sometimes the way leads into the desert, and there we must go. Believers follow Jesus, at His command. His road was never easy, and if we walk in His steps, some of those steps will be tough ones. Today, what it means to follow Christ into a place not found in travel brochures.

Down through the centuries, faithful followers of Christ have sought to live as He would have them live...asking "What would Jesus do?" The Apostle Peter says, "Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example that we should follow in His steps." Following in those steps requires us to make fundamental changes in our priorities. If you are willing, stay with us.

All of us do what we think is really important. For many, that means meeting our own needs first - "looking out for number one." But Jesus was not like that. And if we did what Jesus would do, we would quickly have to redefine who "number one" is. That was Charles Sheldon's theme in the classic novel "In His Steps."

Many businesses analyze "what if" scenarios. But "what if" a believer, running life's race, really did what Jesus would do? That is what Charles Sheldon asked when writing the classic novel "In His Steps." The answers then were radical, but what about today? What would Jesus do? In a moment, Running to Win will ask that provocative question anew.

When it comes time to die, we are all first-timers. But we can look to the one Man who died, and lived again, to learn how to die. Two thieves died with Jesus, but their deaths were very different. One cursed Jesus, while the other believed. Today: lessons on how a Christian should die, and what it will be like on the other side.

There is no federal government program, no insurance policy and no medical procedure that can prevent you and I from dying. For most of us, life seems too relentless to spend much time thinking about death. But coming to grips with our own mortality is a sobering thing we all need to do. Today: more about facing the end the way Jesus did.
