Summer: it is a great time for picnics with hot dogs, chips, baked beans and even watermelon. Most of us really enjoy eating, but there are times in a Christian’s life when eating should be the last thing on the agenda. Today, we will set aside that big luncheon we had planned on attending and remind ourselves of Christ’s teaching on the benefits of fasting.

Many of us say grace together before eating a big meal. We are reminded of Who we have to thank for all that we have. So, prayer is the vehicle that takes our thanks before His throne. Even for a Christian, the old nature is a powerful enemy. In our sinful flesh we want to take the credit for giving a gift. Meanwhile, God wants us to give our gifts in secret, so only He knows who did what. That way we cannot flaunt our donations as badges of honor. There is one thing Jesus was really down on. He told His followers to not give money so as to be seen by others. God wants our giving to be a secret we keep with Him. After all, God, not the IRS, keeps the ultimate books. It is one thing to give when others can see your generosity, but today we will examine our motives for giving when no one is watching.

About Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer
