Rescued From Self-Obsession, Part 2 of 2 (Rescued)

April 22, 2021

We are all selfish. We all put ourselves first, and want to make ourselves look good, competent, and successful. This is what sin has caused in us. And until we’re redeemed by faith in Jesus, we will never be free of our self-absorption. But once salvation in Christ takes place, we are set free from the bondage of selfishness and are free to live and serve Christ.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. After the first murder recorded in the Bible, Cain had no remorse for killing Abel. Rather, he bemoaned his fate of being made a restless wanderer. He was self-absorbed in his own circumstances. Sin turns us in on ourselves, self-focus and self-preoccupied, and the only way we can get our eyes off ourselves is through the redemption Jesus provides.

Sin entered the world through Adam, but righteousness came through Jesus Christ. Thanks to Jesus, there is a way to recover from the damage Adam did. We will all die, and our deaths will be an entry point to either heaven or hell. In Romans 5, Paul describes how to be led into darkness or to follow God into the light.

In the garden of Eden, an infection entered humanity. That infection has since spread to every one of us. The infection is sin, which means “missing the mark” of God’s standards, and we are unable to correct or repair this sinful state on our own. The book of Romans teaches us there are only two kinds of people in the world—those in Adam or those in Christ. Which are you?

There’s more to being saved than most people realize. It involves being given a series of wonderful gifts from the hand of God. And those gifts include the trials we experience, trials that produce perseverance, character, and hope, all wrapped up in the love of God. Jesus didn’t come to simply give us Heaven in the afterlife, but to offer us hope in this present life.

Hopelessness and despair are rampant. In a recent year, almost 37,000 Americans saw no way out of their misery, and then committed suicide. They saw ending life as their only escape. But one of the great blessings God offers to those who believe in Jesus is hope—a hope that Paul says, “does not disappoint.” Do you have peace with yourself, your community, and with God?

When Paul wrote to the people of Rome, he gave conclusive evidence that no ritual can bring salvation. He let his Jewish readers know that their father Abraham was not justified through circumcision or law-keeping but rather through faith. Similarly, we might be tempted to believe that religiosity can save us, but these rituals are empty if they aren’t grounded in the promises of God in Christ.

Faith can destroy you if it is not based on the truth. Faith in the wrong place is worse than no faith at all, because it creates false confidence in empty promises. And when it comes to salvation, the last thing we need is false confidence. Is your faith a true faith, based on the true Jesus, and founded on the true Word of God?

The slightest trace of sin will disqualify you from the presence of God forever. Martin Luther understood this and therefore spent hours each day confessing his sins. But even then, he knew that constant confession wasn’t enough. Luther found salvation by reading the book of Romans, and he used his newfound faith to call the Church back to a biblical understanding of salvation.

The book of Romans has played a major role in world history. By reading its pages a man came to faith in Christ, a man whose actions began a tidal wave of spiritual power across Europe and around the whole world. His name was Martin Luther, and he was desperate to know how he could be right before a holy God. In this message we’ll begin tracing his story through the Protestant Reformation.

Paul’s reasoning is complex, but clear. He proves that all of us are under a just condemnation for sin, but that all who believe in Jesus are rescued from that condemnation and given a robe of righteousness by God Himself. This is the best news anyone has ever heard. Despite what pluralism teaches us, no one ever gets to heaven without the righteousness of Jesus.
