Rescued from Moral Self-Deceptions, Part 1 of 4

October 10, 2012
Reading the book of Romans is like shining a light into a dark closet. In its pages we see ourselves as we really are. We find that apart from God’s grace, we are capable of awful things. In fact, we are morally bankrupt compared to the God who created us. Today we’ll probe the darkness of the human heart, and witness the amazing light God sheds into those hearts that come to believe in Jesus.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When a man is clinging to a life preserver, his sense of self-sufficiency is severely challenged. He knows he needs help. But in today’s culture, many people get offended if you tell them there is nothing they can do to make themselves look good before a holy God. The gospel tells us how God set out to rescue from spiritual death those that believe in His Son.

The word “gospel” simply means “good news.” When a sinner understands his or her condition, that’s good news because it means they realize they need help. God set a rescue plan in motion long before any of us were born — a plan to redeem mankind was built into creation itself. The monumental scale of what the gospel is all about is revealed in the book of Romans.

When you’re tossed overboard into a stormy sea, the most important thing on your mind is getting rescued. It’s a case of life or death. Humanity is drowning in the stormy sea of sin, and even though most don’t realize it, they’re headed for an eternal death. Sinners can’t save themselves, so God has given us a rescue plan from heaven.

There are a lot of reasons why you can trust the Bible — historical, prophetic, scientific — but there’s one reason that tops the list. The power and ability of the Bible to change lives is why it’s always a best-seller. Today we take a personal look at what its power can do in your life, and in mine.

The Bible has left its mark on millions — societies transformed, relationships healed, truth understood. With a track record like that, and the fact that is it God’s written revelation, it’s a book that can be trusted. This message will show us what that means for you.

What do you trust in? Your government? Your savings account? The future? When you come right down to it, there’s little we can trust in. But there is good news because there’s one Author we can trust with our eternal destinies. God is the Author and the book is the Bible — the written revelation of God to mankind. If you’d like to hear what its power can do, stay with us.

To many people, the Bible is nothing more than something you put your hand on to be sworn into office. Beyond that, it’s just Jewish myths and moral teaching. However, the sixty-six books that make up our Bible contain powerful, life-changing truths, thanks to the God who made sure we’re reading what He intended us to read.

If you trust your eternal destiny to the writings in an ancient book, it’s reasonable to ask if that book is trustworthy. In the case of the Bible, the answer is “yes,” especially in terms of which writings made it into the book — a set of documents we call the Canon of Scripture.

If the Bible was written by some 40 authors over a period of 1,600 years, the book we hold today had to have a serious editor. Where did the Bible come from? Who picked what writings got in, and which were rejected? The bottom line is that God superintended the Bible’s contents.

Our minds can’t grasp the immensity of the universe, let alone explain where it came from. Creation displays the glory of God. And the Bible’s simple, profound account of creation stands unchallenged as the only rational explanation for it all. Today we’ll continue our discussion on why creation validates the truth of the Bible.
