Rescued From God's Righteous Wrath, Part 2 of 2 (Rescued)

April 8, 2021

Paul’s reasoning is complex, but clear. He proves that all of us are under a just condemnation for sin, but that all who believe in Jesus are rescued from that condemnation and given a robe of righteousness by God Himself. This is the best news anyone has ever heard. Despite what pluralism teaches us, no one ever gets to heaven without the righteousness of Jesus.

Romans chapter three builds a case for the revolutionary idea that God demands perfect righteousness from us. All of us have sinned, and God’s wrath against sin is enormous and should never be underestimated. But God supplies what He demands by conferring the righteousness of Jesus on those who believe. This gift is called justification.

Our best attempts at goodness will never please God, who sees every act of human goodness as a filthy rag, compared to His own righteousness. Even the best of lives—filled with charity, philanthropy, and service—is tainted and unsuitable for entrance into heaven. Only God has a plan that will save us and take away the stain of our sinful natures and attempts for self-salvation.

It’s clear the Apostle Paul knew nothing of political correctness. He catalogs the depth of human depravity in chapter three of the book of Romans. It’s a list many would argue with, but an accurate list, nonetheless. Unless we are prepared to see our true condition, we will never understand how desperately we need the grace of God as revealed in Jesus Christ.

Some people will tell a falsehood, saying to themselves, “it’s only a little white lie.” But to God, it’s a sin, and sin is never a good idea, no matter what good we think may come from it. In this message we continue our journey through Romans chapter three, where we lose the hypocrisy and become real people, truly clean from the inside out.

To some degree, everyone projects an outward appearance that may not square with inner reality. Regarding salvation, it’s easy to make yourself and others believe that all is well when it’s far from well. Even though you might have all the advantages of religion, you’re not necessarily approved by God. So how does God deliver us from our temptations of hypocrisy?

When we adopt an aura of religious respectability, it’s amazing what dark secrets lie beneath the surface where no one can see. We deceive ourselves and say God makes an exception for us, but not for them. Join us as we learn more about identifying our deceptions.

Religion can prevent people from understanding the truth about themselves. Religion can breed the pride that says, “I’m okay.” In Romans chapter two, Paul addresses the religious elite of his day, and shows how ceremony and ritual had insulated them from God’s analysis of their hearts. Self-deception is especially deep when expressed in religious terms. In this message we discover why we need rescuing so badly.

In Romans chapter one, Paul reveals that fallen mankind suppresses the truth, darkening their minds and committing moral perversion, all the while thinking that they’re more enlightened than those who came before them. You can be wrong about politics. You can be wrong about philosophy. But don’t be wrong about the message given in the book of Romans.

Reading the book of Romans is like shining a light into darkness. In its pages we see ourselves as we really are. We find that, apart from God’s grace, we are capable of awful things. In fact, we’re morally bankrupt compared to our Creator. In this message we probe the darkness of the human heart, and the amazing light God shines into those hearts that come to believe in Jesus.

When a man is clinging to a life preserver, he knows he needs help. He knows he is not self-sufficient. But in today’s culture, many people get offended if you tell them there’s nothing they can do to make themselves look good before a holy God. The gospel tells us how God set out to rescue those that believe in His Son from spiritual death. Do you know how badly we need that rescue?
