Miles Apart in the Same House #2 of 4

Despite counseling, divorce marks the end of half of American marriages, leaving behind incalculable damage... When the family unit breaks down, culture itself breaks down. Communication breakdowns affect nearly every marriage at one time or another, and this began quite early in history. In fact, we have record of it in the Garden of Eden. Today: a look at the damage sin can do.

But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. Endangered species: some environmental activists fret about the fate of the snail darter, or, perhaps the spotted owl... But the real endangered species is the family. Fractured, broken, stressed, dysfunctional...all these words describe a crisis in the most basic unit of society...a crisis that begins when marriages fail. Today: a candid look at the causes of these failures.

Left to ourselves, we're basically narcissistic. We'd much rather meet our own needs than meet the needs of others. Enter marriage. In matrimony, two people have to care for each other. This combats the inherent selfishness we all share. In many ways, marriage is a crucible in which character is forged, and where happiness is found in pleasing your mate, not yourself.

Anyone who thinks that marriage is the magic door to happiness might want to note that fully half of all marriages fail today... The resulting carnage of divorce and shattered families leaves a trail of dysfunction for generations. God intended marriage to develop character, not just fulfill sensual desire. Those who opt out of their marriages miss many rewards. Today: what those rewards are.

When she comes down the aisle, she's the picture of perfection. And he's Prince Charming in a black tuxedo... On their wedding day, few starry-eyed couples realize the searchlight that their marriage will be in revealing the character flaws they both have. Today: more on the thesis that being happy is not the main idea for marriage, as far as God is concerned.

Walk down the aisle, say "I do," cut the cake, toss the bouquet. Marriage: it's the way to happiness...or, is it? There's good evidence in the Bible that marriage is designed more to develop character than to insure a lifetime of bliss. When the rough spots come, and they will, what are couples to take from those experiences? Today: a frank dose of married reality.

The central idea of the marriage vow is this: you and your mate pledge that sexual activity is restricted to the two of you... No old flames...no flings...no other partners. To violate this destroys the trust that a working marriage requires, as well as violating the commands of the God who designed marriage in the first place. Today: why keeping your vows is crucial if your marriage is to make it.

Many marriages are on shaky ground. Some see their mates like car models...trade them in when a better one comes along... The underlying issue is covetousness...wanting what you don't have. The Bible has clear directions for making marriages last, and today, we'll see why living a life of love, purity and honor is the only way to insure a long and satisfying marriage.

When a young couple stands at the altar, all is love, and the wedding vows come easily. It's later that reality sets in... Inevitable conflicts arise...the temptation to split up is great. What is the glue that can bind two people together when the romantic luster fades? Today: more about the power of commitment, and why keeping our commitments can save our marriages and our families.

In the old days, it was said, "his word is as good as his bond." A handshake and a promise was all it took to seal the deal. These days, when a marriage breaks up, we have pre-nuptual agreements to divvy up the loot. Few take seriously the covenant they enter into when they tie the knot and exchange the rings. Today: back to basics, and why marriage, in God's eyes, is a lifetime deal, come what may.

Commitment: a fast-fading part of modern marriage, where "irreconcilable differences" mean divorce is around the corner... While there were differences between Wanda and Gustav Lutzer, they were never irreconcilable. Their marriage lasted 76 years, when Gustav passed away at age 106. On today's broadcast, Dr. Erwin Lutzer, their fifth child, will tell of their commitment.
