Judging Doctrine #2 of 3

June 1, 2010
Sound doctrine is what we need. Sadly, it’s in short supply from many modern-day prophets on religious television. Confusion over doctrine throws many people off the track in the race of life. They send money to those requiring money for the promise of financial freedom. Words of knowledge replace words from the Bible. Today we will learn how to discern false teaching.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. If you watch enough religious cable TV, you'll be totally confused about which doctrines are true and which are false. In the marketplace of religious ideas, packaging and glitz often carry more weight than Bible truth. Today: you'll hear a pointed call to return to a standard against which doctrines must be measured, doctrines that impact your eternal destiny.

Cultural distinctives...music styles...food...we're quick to judge one another on matters that are not central to our faith. The race of life is tough enough without being called to task by another Christian for something the Bible is silent about. Today: learning to discern the difference between core principles and personal preferences to avoid judging others needlessly.

When finding fault in others, our vision is 20/20. It quickly becomes 20/200 when focusing on our own faults. Jesus taught us to not judge a small splinter in someone else's eye without first removing the large wood beam from our own eye. That principle is found in Matthew chapter 7 and it's our focus on today's broadcast. So, how's your eye today?

Turn on cable TV, and you'll see a variety of religious experiences. Are they all valid? And, is it even OK to ask? The wise believer runs what he or she sees through a filter of discernment, since there is much error mixed with truth these days. Today: a foundational study in Matthew chapter 7 to help us know when, and how, to judge what we see.

It's easy to fit in, to follow the crowd, to blend with the trend, to accept whatever we encounter without question. But we're called to run life's race, not in the well-worn ruts, but on the high ground of God's word. Today: why we must discern right from wrong, and truth from error. Otherwise, we'll have little if any impact on a world in dire need of Jesus.

The Bible says, "Don't let the world press you into its mold." Yet that's exactly what has happened in church after church. The world is happy to accommodate various viewpoints, as long as none claim to be the truth. As we adopt that tolerance, we're sliding down a slippery slope towards making no difference in the world at all. Clearly, it's time to get back on track.

Years ago, people could see a big difference between the world and the church. Sadly, that difference is fast disappearing. Now, we're in the fast lane with everybody else, racing to acquire more goods for our short-term benefit. Many feel that evangelical distinctives are fading as the cultural noise level rises. It's high time for some straight talk about what can be done.

"For without faith it is impossible to please God...." This Bible verse is the key to seeing victory when all seems lost. Living in triumph means knowing that nothing can separate you from the love of God, not even death or the death of someone close to you. Only the Christian can face the worst life has to offer and know it's but a steppingstone to a glory that will never end.

Romans chapter eight ranks in the pantheon of the greatest words ever penned. The chapter ends in utter triumph. Paul declares that nothing in all creation will ever separate believers in Jesus from the love of God. Today: why we are "super-conquerors" over anything that dares try to keep us from that love, even over the power of death itself. Today we find a reason to rejoice.
