In The Potter's House, Part 2 of 2 (Single Sermon)

April 28, 2021

Seeing ourselves as clay in the potter’s hand helps us to avoid believing the myth that we are in control. We frequently don’t like the stresses of being shaped by God. However, as the Potter, God is in charge, and He has a purpose we cannot see. His purpose will take us through the fire so that, one day, we will come out as gold. Are we content being clay on God’s pottery wheel?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Most of us go about our business, thinking we’re in control of our lives. But God sets the agenda, and He knows what is best. Many believers have never seen themselves as clay on a potter’s wheel, being molded to suit the Potter’s purposes. But the sooner we understand this truth, the sooner we’ll be fruitful members of the body of Christ, serving and loving both God and others.

The enemy of our souls will do anything to keep us mired in the sins we used to commit. Jesus sets us free from the compulsion to sin, and we must be diligent to avoid situations that might cause us to fall back into old patterns of behavior. In this message we take a final look at overcoming daily sins.

There is no “safe” sin. We might be tempted to excuse our wrongdoing, claiming we can control our sin, but it will always demand more. Sin is not static, and its ultimate destination is death. But thanks be to God, at conversion, we are set free from our old slave master the devil, and we become slaves to righteousness, free to be what God created us to be.

We are all selfish. We all put ourselves first, and want to make ourselves look good, competent, and successful. This is what sin has caused in us. And until we’re redeemed by faith in Jesus, we will never be free of our self-absorption. But once salvation in Christ takes place, we are set free from the bondage of selfishness and are free to live and serve Christ.

After the first murder recorded in the Bible, Cain had no remorse for killing Abel. Rather, he bemoaned his fate of being made a restless wanderer. He was self-absorbed in his own circumstances. Sin turns us in on ourselves, self-focus and self-preoccupied, and the only way we can get our eyes off ourselves is through the redemption Jesus provides.

Sin entered the world through Adam, but righteousness came through Jesus Christ. Thanks to Jesus, there is a way to recover from the damage Adam did. We will all die, and our deaths will be an entry point to either heaven or hell. In Romans 5, Paul describes how to be led into darkness or to follow God into the light.

In the garden of Eden, an infection entered humanity. That infection has since spread to every one of us. The infection is sin, which means “missing the mark” of God’s standards, and we are unable to correct or repair this sinful state on our own. The book of Romans teaches us there are only two kinds of people in the world—those in Adam or those in Christ. Which are you?

There’s more to being saved than most people realize. It involves being given a series of wonderful gifts from the hand of God. And those gifts include the trials we experience, trials that produce perseverance, character, and hope, all wrapped up in the love of God. Jesus didn’t come to simply give us Heaven in the afterlife, but to offer us hope in this present life.

Hopelessness and despair are rampant. In a recent year, almost 37,000 Americans saw no way out of their misery, and then committed suicide. They saw ending life as their only escape. But one of the great blessings God offers to those who believe in Jesus is hope—a hope that Paul says, “does not disappoint.” Do you have peace with yourself, your community, and with God?

When Paul wrote to the people of Rome, he gave conclusive evidence that no ritual can bring salvation. He let his Jewish readers know that their father Abraham was not justified through circumcision or law-keeping but rather through faith. Similarly, we might be tempted to believe that religiosity can save us, but these rituals are empty if they aren’t grounded in the promises of God in Christ.
