Running To Win

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

He Owns Our Reputation #3 of 3

October 19, 2007
In the body of Christ, personal sins cannot be swept under the rug indefinitely. Sooner or later, everyone feels their impact. We do affect each other, and that is one reason why Ananias and Sapphira were judged for lying to God in front of the Apostles. Hoping to look good, they ended up in the local cemetery. The message, then and now, is clear: God tolerates no deceit.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. As we all know, money and politics are closely related. People who support winning candidates expect something in return. Sadly, the same can be true in churches. Heavy contributors are often the heavy decision-makers. This may have played a part in the motivations of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts chapter five.

We would all save a lot of energy if who we seemed to be matched who we really were. In other words: no images to maintain. Most people worry about how they are perceived. So, they will smile on the outside while crying on the inside. Their lives are often an act for the benefit of others. We can lose the game face, because in the final analysis, God is in charge of our reputations. To learn more, stay with us.

Handling money well is a sign of spiritual maturity. The early church knew this, and we can learn from their example. In our current study we are learning about five laws of stewardship as seen in Acts chapter four. Today we will find out about the unexpected blessings that come to those who see their money as, in reality, God's money.

The love of money is the root of all evil...yet in this world we cannot function without money. What is a Christian to do? If we recognize God's laws of stewardship, we can be freed from the downside of having money. When we are no longer owners, but rather, caretakers of financial resources, the whole picture changes. And this picture can be clearly seen in Acts chapter four.

Win a hundred million dollars in a lottery and you are an instant media star. These days, people dream of the big bucks...and they will lie, cheat, steal and kill to get those bucks. Yet once they have them, those dollars often corrupt people from the inside out. How can a Christian properly handle his cash, yet stay free of its addictive allure? Stay with us...there is no charge.

When we hear of Christians persecuted for their faith, we often think of high profile people like preachers or missionaries. But a day is coming when ordinary believers will feel the heat as the rising hatred of Christ brings suffering on a wide scaIe. Our allegiance to Jesus will be tested...we will be sifted like wheat to see if we are the real grain, or merely useless chaff.

These days, almost everyone sues when their rights are violated. Everyone, that is, except true believers in Christ. In a day when pornographers have more legal protections than preachers, what do Christians do when the pressure mounts? The answer lies in the pattern set by the Apostles in the book of Acts. Today: handling persecution the old-fashioned way.

The rights of believers to exercise their religion in America are being slowly destroyed. Clearly, persecution is coming. What do we do when faced with tough choices...choices to obey God or man? The book of Acts gives us a blueprint on how to handle suffering for Christ...and there may be a lot of that awaiting us in the days ahead.

How often we have wished we could retract words we have spoken in haste or in anger, words that have wounded those around us. There is one gift of tongues all believers should have...the gift of a tongue controlled by the Holy Spirit, a tongue that always edifies and never tears down. Today: some guidance on keeping our tongues in check.
October 8, 2007
The gift of tongues has been a battleground for a long time. Some say it proves you are filled with the Spirit, so you had better have it. To help clear up confusion, let us focus on what actually happened in the first century, and discover why the gift of tongues was given and what kind of tongues they really were.
