He Owns Our Appointments #1 of 3

October 29, 2007
These days, people look to their personal digital assistants, or PDAs, to find out what is next on their busy schedules. Keeping appointments is crucial for business success. But God has a heavenly PDA for His people, and sometimes makes sudden changes in His list of things for us to do. Today: how the Holy Spirit sets the agenda for a child of God.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. While we focus everyday on the here and now, eternity awaits us. Those who know Christ have a glorious future ahead of them. The doorway to heaven is the death of the believer. When Stephen was martyred, he had a vision of Jesus welcoming him home. For those who fear death, this can be your vision as well.

Most people invest heavily in their futures. Savings accounts and retirement plans give us comfort for those "golden years." But wise believers know that the real future lies in the hands of God, not in any plans we can make. Like the martyr Stephen, our ultimate destiny lies beyond this life. Today: you will hear about the eternal future ahead for a child of God.

In seeking employees, interviewers look for the right education and experience. But for workers in the body of Christ, it is different. God's list of qualifications for kingdom jobs includes character and spiritual maturity. And having the "wisdom from above" is a key requirement. Today: finding your way into the place God has for you in a local church.

Filling jobs usually means resumés, interviews and salary offers. But it is a very different story in the body of Christ. God has called each believer to a task in His kingdom, and the book of Acts shows us how He makes His calling known. Today: meet God's personnel department for your local church.

In our culture, reaching the top often means clawing your way past other people, doing whatever it takes to succeed. Things are different in God's kingdom. "The first shall be last, and the last shall be first," as Jesus said. In the early church, leadership was demonstrated by servanthood. Today: a look at how to get ahead, God's way.

In the body of Christ, personal sins cannot be swept under the rug indefinitely. Sooner or later, everyone feels their impact. We do affect each other, and that is one reason why Ananias and Sapphira were judged for lying to God in front of the Apostles. Hoping to look good, they ended up in the local cemetery. The message, then and now, is clear: God tolerates no deceit.

As we all know, money and politics are closely related. People who support winning candidates expect something in return. Sadly, the same can be true in churches. Heavy contributors are often the heavy decision-makers. This may have played a part in the motivations of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts chapter five.

We would all save a lot of energy if who we seemed to be matched who we really were. In other words: no images to maintain. Most people worry about how they are perceived. So, they will smile on the outside while crying on the inside. Their lives are often an act for the benefit of others. We can lose the game face, because in the final analysis, God is in charge of our reputations. To learn more, stay with us.

Handling money well is a sign of spiritual maturity. The early church knew this, and we can learn from their example. In our current study we are learning about five laws of stewardship as seen in Acts chapter four. Today we will find out about the unexpected blessings that come to those who see their money as, in reality, God's money.

The love of money is the root of all evil...yet in this world we cannot function without money. What is a Christian to do? If we recognize God's laws of stewardship, we can be freed from the downside of having money. When we are no longer owners, but rather, caretakers of financial resources, the whole picture changes. And this picture can be clearly seen in Acts chapter four.
