He Owns Our Allegiances #3 of 3

October 11, 2007
When we hear of Christians persecuted for their faith, we often think of high profile people like preachers or missionaries. But a day is coming when ordinary believers will feel the heat as the rising hatred of Christ brings suffering on a wide scaIe. Our allegiance to Jesus will be tested...we will be sifted like wheat to see if we are the real grain, or merely useless chaff.

These days, almost everyone sues when their rights are violated. Everyone, that is, except true believers in Christ. In a day when pornographers have more legal protections than preachers, what do Christians do when the pressure mounts? The answer lies in the pattern set by the Apostles in the book of Acts. Today: handling persecution the old-fashioned way.

The rights of believers to exercise their religion in America are being slowly destroyed. Clearly, persecution is coming. What do we do when faced with tough choices...choices to obey God or man? The book of Acts gives us a blueprint on how to handle suffering for Christ...and there may be a lot of that awaiting us in the days ahead.

How often we have wished we could retract words we have spoken in haste or in anger, words that have wounded those around us. There is one gift of tongues all believers should have...the gift of a tongue controlled by the Holy Spirit, a tongue that always edifies and never tears down. Today: some guidance on keeping our tongues in check.

The gift of tongues has been a battleground for a long time. Some say it proves you are filled with the Spirit, so you had better have it. To help clear up confusion, let us focus on what actually happened in the first century, and discover why the gift of tongues was given and what kind of tongues they really were.

It is said that "the pen is mightier than the sword." Yes, words are powerful, and when spoken, they can cut like swords. If we could rewind the tapes of our lives and hear all we have said, we would probably be shocked. Our tongues can be lethal weapons. Only under God's control can they bring blessing rather than cursing.

As a runner heads into the last turn, sometimes his energy begins to run out. What he needs then is a source of power. Like a runner getting a second wind, we are not left to carry out the Great Commission without resources. Jesus promised power, and when He has first place in our lives, that power begins to flow. How do we receive it? Stay with us, and you will find out.

You always listen closely to someone's last words. The disciples certainly did before they saw Jesus rise into heaven. Like a runner in a race, Jesus passed the baton to those He trained to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth. His words in Acts chapter one galvanized His followers then, as they should us who believe now.

The message is clear. Our culture and the media tell us to "look out for number one." And in a way, they are right. Running the race of life involves understanding who is in charge. Once we realize that "number one" is not us, the race gets a lot easier. Today: let us take the first step in living life with God in firm control.

#4 of 4Once we realize how great our need is before God, we will quickly forget thinking that we can somehow help ourselves get to heaven. Once our eyes are open to the truth, we will find that only God has the power needed to raise sinners from the dead and give them new life. Please stay with us for today's broadcast, as we dispel a final myth about God: a lie that must not be believed.

#3 of 4All the good deeds in the world cannot erase the guilt of sin that every member of the human raced bears before a holy God. The Bible says that all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. Only God's righteousness opens heaven's doors. That is why we are deceived if we believe that "God helps those who help themselves." Stay with us, as we unmask a final lie about God.
