Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. At the core of God desiring glory is the plan of redemption He designed long ago. Bringing many sons and daughters to glory was His intention, even though He knew mankind would fall in the Garden of Eden. In this sermon Pastor Lutzer shares how that plan unfolded.

With Jesus as its cornerstone, the Church has a rock-solid foundation. As believers, we’re part of that building, since we’re called “living stones” by the Apostle Peter. In this sermon we learn about the Church that Jesus founded, and our part in that divine structure.

Believers attend church to meet God, and further extend His glory. We gather to express to God His worth to us: that is what the word “worship” is all about. We need to remember the bigger picture of God’s glory in our church.

God’s glory is easy to lose sight of. All it takes is one small sin. In Moses’ day, the glory of God would come and go. In the end, it departed, as the sins of Israel caused God to draw back His favor. Could this be true even today?

In ancient societies, shepherds had the low rung on the ladder. Their jobs were smelly, and the hours were long. When Jesus was born, the heavenly host of angels did not appear to the ruling elite. Instead, they appeared to the humblest people they could find—shepherds in the hills of Bethlehem.

Many people have misconceptions about angels. In the Bible, the word “angel” simply means “messenger.” These beings serve God in heaven and on earth, doing His bidding. When they gathered over Bethlehem the night Jesus was born, they heralded the greatest message that has ever been sent.

After the last prophet’s writings, the voice of God fell silent in Israel for four hundred years. Then, one day, a brilliant light flooded the skies over a sleepy town south of Jerusalem. Myriads of angels announced the coming of a Savior, who was Christ the Lord. These messengers of God proclaimed the greatest news sinful mankind would ever hear.

Jesus said of Himself, “The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” He always had to sleep in someone else’s home. His first night on earth was in a borrowed manger—a cattle feeding trough. The Son of God began His time among us in rude surroundings. He came with no kingly pomp—just a humble bed of straw.

We encounter many conflicts and divisions in our lives, but none weightier than the division between a holy God and sinful man. Two thousand years ago that dividing wall was breached in a feeding trough in the tiny town of Bethlehem.
