Getting Investments Right, Part 1 of 2 (You Can't Redo Life)

November 1, 2018

A wealthy man decided to fire a manager. So the manager cut some deals with the master’s debtors to curry favor, to have options once his job ended. Jesus made this story into a parable about investments. But why did Christ commend a man who acted improperly?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. In Luke 14, Jesus told a story of a lavish banquet. The invited guests all had other things to do, so the man giving the banquet brought in the poor and the crippled—those who would never expect such a gift. This parable shows us how to approach people with the gift of the gospel.

Jesus told a parable about a man hosting a banquet. When the invited guests gave excuses and refused to attend, the host invited anyone he could find to sit at his table. God seeks the lost just like this man sought people to feed. We too should reach people who need the gospel.

A master gave three servants money to invest. Jesus said that two of them made substantial returns and were rewarded. The third hid his money in a piece of cloth and felt the wrath of his master. This parable compares money with the way we spread the gospel. Will we be faithful with the good news?

How we handle the small tasks of today is vitally important. It affects whether we’re given a larger task to perform—and enjoy the rewards that go with it. In Luke 19, Jesus taught about faithfulness and the perils of unfaithfulness.

Jesus taught using parables, or stories. He spoke of a strong man who can’t be defeated, except by a stronger man. In Luke chapter 11, we learn that we can’t overcome evil alone, for we can only defeat Satan in the name and power of Jesus.

Few people these days take seriously the idea of evil spirits inhabiting people. But demons are very real. Jesus drove demons out of many, setting them free from destruction and bondage. There is a spirit realm, filled with conflict between the powers of darkness and the angelic powers who serve God.

We don’t always know why, but God chooses to give some of His children more than others—more abilities, more money, and better health. When we realize that the Giver is the one who distributes the gifts, and not the receiver, we’ve come a long way in understanding how God rewards his people.

In a parable, Jesus taught His disciples how rewards are handed out in the kingdom of God. What He taught seems quite unfair. In this message we look beneath the surface of Jesus’ words for life-changing truth that upends our innate sense of fairness.

The story of the Prodigal Son is really the story of two prodigals. One left in rebellion, the other stayed in rebellion. Let’s look again into a famous parable of Jesus that shows how the Father in heaven relates to His beloved children—even when they go astray.

How should parents react when a child goes their own way, knowing the sorrow that their child will face? Through the parable of the Prodigal Son, we learn deep truths about prodigal children. At the same time, we also learn how to be better parents.
