October 16, 2009

Casinos know gambling is a lousy deal, except for them. They call it "gaming" instead. Whatever the label, it's bad news. From lottery tickets to video poker, gambling spells big trouble, taking money from those who can least afford it, those hoping for a "big break." We recommend a break all right, a listening break right now to break the gambling habit. Please stay with us.

It's easy to spot greed in others. You can tell when people are lusting after money or other things, you see it in their faces. But the trouble is that often we can't see it in ourselves and that greed has just as solid a foothold on us as in anyone else. So polish up that mirror and get set to take a long look. Today, we learn some tough lessons on how to lose the greed we all share down deep.

Even in a tough economy, it seems the rich keep getting richer, building bigger barns to store all the stuff they're buying. Jesus says those who accumulate money and things might be in for a rude shock. After all, none of us can hitch our U-Hauls to a hearse. Getting a grip on the greed we all share: that's our focus on today's broadcast. Please stay with us.

I Timothy 6:10: "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith, in their greed." Paul goes on to say that the greedy "pierce themselves through with many sorrows." Grabbing that fast buck is a trap that has sunk many a Christian, and, many a ministry. Today: a look in the mirror, as the greedy heart is revealed. Stay with us.

"Not my fault!" These days it's common to blame everyone else for our conflicts...everyone except the sinner within. James tells Christians that conflicts come from inner desires at war with the purposes of God. There's no point in "pointing the finger" elsewhere...our troubles begin...within. Get used to it: your life is a battleground, and Satan wants to win.

Tension...quarrels...fights...at one time or another, all of us find ourselves in conflict with someone else. It's no fun. Even Christians have a dark side...desires within that can snare us on the race of life. The Bible says, "Take heed, lest you fall." Any of us can tumble off the spiritual mountaintop, because the war within each believer is very real.

Temptations abound which can ruin your life and the lives of others. Today: a big-picture view of a great battle...as the enemy of your soul seeks to do you in. The Christian life: joy, assurance, and deep satisfaction. But it's also a life of suffering. Can these co-exist? Today, we'll learn why faith always leads to ultimate victory, but may not change our immediate circumstances. We'll come full-circle in our series on unanswered prayer, and then, find ourselves content with the God to Whom we pray.

We Americans have short attention spans. We're used to soundbite news, fast food, and immediate solutions to problems. However, many people pray for years, asking God for deliverance from appalling situations. The answers never seem to come. So, faith is not getting what we want...faith says we accept what God gives us. Please stay tuned.
