Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. As believers display God’s character to each other, the world cannot help but take notice. The world will see Christians running life’s race together, helping each other, not jostling for advantage. They’ll see something they long for — true fellowship — where the needs of others take priority. Today Dr. Lutzer will share some insights on showing the love of God in practical ways.

As God’s community, the church should display God’s character in the lives of His children to the eyes of a watching world. Let us pause in our races of life and listen to some teaching on character and how we are to relate to one another in the body of Christ. Make no mistake, those on the outside can tell how we treat each other on the inside.

Are we on this planet just to take up space, eat, and die? No, we’re here to make a difference in the lives of others. Some people want to live their spiritual lives within the four walls of their church. But others sense God’s call to display His love outside the four walls — to show the love which Jesus said would cause people to be convicted of their sin. Do you sense this call?

Our bodies have many parts and so does the body of Christ — the church with its members — each one different, each with a spiritual gift. The race of life is most productive when everyone fulfills their God-given role. And Romans 12 lists the spiritual gifts God gives to make fulfilling that role a joy, not a burden.

None of us handles loneliness well. We’re designed to be with others. And the church is where God wants us to find community. Getting along with others requires us not to think too highly of ourselves. The Apostle Paul will help us see ourselves realistically so that we can fit in with others as God intends.

Everyone has the desire for community: to be able to share the joys and sorrows of life with others. The race of life is a lot easier with others running with you. Today, we begin a series that explains why the local church is the place where those needs can best be met.

Humans are a mixed bag — some of our impulses are truly generous, but others are based purely on self-interest. The Apostle Paul shows us the truth about the human heart in Romans 3 and it’s not a pretty picture. Quoting from the Psalms, Paul leaves us tried, convicted, sentenced, and in desperate need of a hand from heaven to raise us from our inherent sinfulness.

It’s clear the Apostle Paul knew nothing of “political correctness,” because some of what he wrote was quite unpopular. He catalogs the depth of human depravity in Romans 3, a list many would argue with, but an accurate list nonetheless. As we read it, we see our true condition and why we’re in such desperate need of the grace of God as revealed in Jesus.

Some people will tell a falsehood, saying to themselves, “it’s only a little white lie.” To God, it’s a sin, and sin is never a good idea, no matter what good we think may come from it. As we continue to journey through Romans 3, we lose the hypocrisy, take off the mask, and become real people — really clean from the inside out.

In defending the gospel to his Jewish readers, Paul wrote of their lack of faith, as compared to God’s faithfulness. In Romans, he affirmed that faithfulness in the strongest terms. Some see the promises of God to Israel as having been transferred to the church since Israel was unfaithful. Today: a resounding declaration that God is by no means finished with Israel as a nation.
