Escaping From Tight Places, Part 1 of 2 (Getting Closer To God)

July 19, 2021

They call it a "can't win" scenario. Pharaoh finally let Israel leave Egypt, but then pursued them in order to kill them. The people said, "we should never have left...bondage is better than death." In this message, we learn that the power of God is on display when we, like Moses, find ourselves in tight places.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It was more than high drama. The Passover taught both Egypt and Israel that God means what He says. Salvation does not come without the shedding of blood. As we journey life’s road, let us never forget the high price paid for our salvation, a price depicted in the terror-filled night in Egypt as Moses and the people saw the angel of death pass over.

It was a night of terror. The angel of death swept throughout Egypt, killing the firstborn of every family whose doorpost had no blood. The Passover was the last plague to make Pharaoh let the Israelites go. But it was more than that. It foreshadowed a future sacrificial Lamb, whose blood would save people eternally.

God went to extreme lengths to force Egypt’s Pharaoh to let the children of Israel go. Would He do the same to you and to me? God wants our full attention, and no idols are to take His place. But many people today harden their hearts, and they won’t let go of their idols.

In Moses’ day, idols were carved from stone or made of metal. But today’s idols are more subtle, and they often go undetected. Even good things like work, family, or patriotism can take God’s place in our hearts. In God’s view, every idol must go. There’s no room for anything that takes the rightful place of God, not even the flag of our country. In this message we’ll find out why.

Some people think God can be manipulated. Others think He’s too busy to care about what goes on down here on Earth. But Moses learned the truth. In Exodus 4 and 5, Moses learned that God is absolutely sovereign and absolutely holy. And in this message, we’ll watch as Moses finds God to be absolutely faithful.

On the surface it sounds preposterous. If someone says, “I know God,” many people would simply laugh. It’s hard enough to meet an important official like the President, so how could we think we know God? But the truth about God is amazing! While we may never shake the President’s hand, we can know God and know Him intimately. That’s what Moses found out.

When believers know what God wants them to do, but refuse to do it, they often find creative excuses for their refusal. That’s what Moses did, until God graciously overcame his objections and lame excuses. In this message we learn about the importance of obeying God.

There is something futile about making excuses to other people. You know, and they know, that even the best excuses just don’t measure up. Moses found out that excuses never work with God. In this message we look at the attempts Moses made to avoid the inevitable.

If life were a bed of roses, we might never appreciate how good roses smell. For 40 years of Moses' life, herding sheep was his job. But during this season, God prepared him for leadership beyond his wildest dreams.

Most of us know Moses for parting the Red Sea, and for telling Egypt’s Pharaoh to “let my people go.” Lesser known is how Moses got there. The race of life for Moses led him through valleys as well as mountains. In this message we begin a series that explains how, over many years, Moses got closer to God.
