Dying With Christ, Part 1 of 4 (The Legacy of a Converted Man)

April 26, 2016

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. In Roman times, slaves made up over half the population. Paul wrote about one of these slaves while in prison.  Let’s learn from Paul’s admonition to the owner of Onesimus, a man named Philemon.

In Roman times, you were either free or you were a slave owned by a free man. Times have changed by the grace of God, but in Paul’s day that’s how it was. A man named Philemon got a letter from Paul about a runaway slave; it was a letter that revealed Paul’s heart.

Paul’s ministry in Jerusalem caused his enemies to have him arrested on false charges. He was sent to Caesarea, Rome’s government center in the region. He languished in prison, waiting to answer these charges before King Agrippa. But when he finally got it, Paul seized his opportunity to speak.

Boldness is the willingness to do what must be done no matter the cost. Paul took a stand for the ages atop Mars Hill, telling Greek philosophers the truth about God and the Savior. But how can we be as bold as Paul?

When you stand on Mars Hill in Athens, you’re standing where history happened. Paul the Apostle stood on that same rock, telling the philosophers of his day about the true God. They were the intellectual cream of the crop, but in Paul, in the message he bore, they found their match.

Can the gospel stand up against modern philosophy? It did in ancient Greece. Paul sparred verbally with both Stoics and Epicureans. The truth of Jesus and His resurrection is our message, and we can boldly proclaim it like Paul.
