Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. We’re far from being the inherently good people that our culture says we are. In fact, apart from certain restraints, we’re capable of unspeakable evil. In today’s message, we continue on our journey of self-discovery.

In order to keep from falling into denial and even deception, we need to use the Word of God as our mirror. That’s where we should go to find out who we are. Unlike a fun house mirror that distorts reality, the Word of God is unbent and will help us find a sense of identity.

Self-perception lies at the core of who we are and the way we behave. We look for mirrors on our walls to show us what we want to see. The result is self-delusion—and one answer as to why good people do bad things.

The first mirror that reflects who we are is our parents. Teachers, coaches and the culture can influence us as well. And what they reflect back builds (or destroys) our perception of ourselves. Even at an early age, children discover that they can be one person on the outside and someone completely different inside. And that young, impressionable identity will determine our behavior: what we do and how we live.

All of this life is a preparation for the one to come. For the believer, this finite life will give way to an eternal one, and what God has prepared for those who have trusted Christ is beyond imagination. Not only will sorrows and pain cease, but we’ll experience “joy inexpressible and full of glory.” This message gives us a last look at perhaps the most important part of the invisible world: a place called heaven.

Hollywood depicts heaven as pearly gates, clouds, harps, and wings everywhere, all on streets of gold. The impression is one of a resort, where you can have a good time. But the Bible’s picture of heaven is much richer. Here, the people of God will worship the One most worthy to be worshipped, and enjoy His presence forever.

There are many palaces around the world that have ornate throne rooms for their royalty. Revelation 4 gives us a look into God’s throne room and what a room it is! The symbolic language can only give us a hint of the majesty of that most holy place—the place in the invisible world we most want to see.

We can’t see the life to come as clearly as we see what’s around us. But the Bible does give some tantalizing views of what’s ahead for a child of God. Once we have a grasp of the wonders that await us, making it through this life gets a lot easier. In today’s message, we peer across the great divide into the ultimate destiny for all who trust Christ.

An angel declared that Jesus would “save His people from their sins.” Since we can’t save ourselves, that’s really good news. If God didn’t reach out to us, we’d never find Him on our own. In Zechariah 3, the angel of the Lord spoke of clean garments for the high priest, foreshadowing the robe of Christ’s righteousness that admits us into heaven.

One of Satan’s favorite tactics is to whisper to Christians, “See, you sinned! You’re not worthy to get into heaven!” The truth Satan hides when he does this is that believers don’t stand on their own records. They stand on the merits of Jesus. This allows us to deal with the guilt that often paralyzes us. Knowing our place in Christ means we can tell Satan to get lost.
