Jeremiah wrote, “The heart is deceitful above all things. Who can understand it?” Yes, why fail at the finish line? At the end, King Asa’s long faithfulness to God crumbled. He chose to bribe a nearby King with the temple’s gold and silver. Politics can corrupt the best of men, and Asa was no exception. Today: judgment falls for making a really bad deal.

God has many ways to persuade us to do what He wants done. For the prophet Jonah, it involved his environment. Jonah ran from God’s command to preach in Ninevah. But he could not outrun the long reach of God, who appointed several “persuaders” to bring Jonah to a place of submission: a great fish, a plant, a worm, and today, a scorching east wind.

When we come to a fork in the road, we have two choices. If we choose the wrong fork, we have to face the consequences. That’s what happened to Jonah, told by God to preach to people he did not like. His attempt to flee brought him to face the God of the second chance, the God whose will would ultimately be done. Today: lessons we can apply when coming to our forks in the road.

Obligations…we all have them. Some are like millstones around our necks, and we’d do anything to be free of the pressure. Today: a story of an obligation God gave to a prophet, and his amazing journey to avoid that obligation. Jonah was told to go preach to the people of Ninevah, and everything in him said “no way.” The lessons for all of us will soon be clear, so stay tuned.
