No doubt most people live for the here and now. They'll do anything to avoid thinking about their future date with death. Certainly, Jesus taught us how to live. But He also taught us how to die. When Jesus said "It is finished," He was proclaiming victory from a place of apparent defeat, dying on a Roman cross. He paid the penalty for the sin of mankind, and we who believe can stand before God forgiven, our debt cancelled, thanks to Him. Redemption began in the mind of God. It found its completion on a hill outside Jerusalem.

Many people think they somehow have to earn their way into heaven. They don't realize how much that would cost. The penalty for sin has to be paid before anyone can enter God's holy presence. When Jesus cried out "it is finished," He was signaling to all who could hear Him that His imminent death would pay that debt...in full.

It's a great joy to burn a mortgage. The bill is paid in full. The house is now yours...no one else can lay claim to it. When Jesus cried out, "It is finished," He was declaring the debt of sin "paid in full." These are words, not of despair, but of victory. And that victory means eternal life for those who believe, and receive Him.

It's a great paradox. The one Who said "I thirst" from the cross is the one Who says "if any man thirst, let Him come to Me." He paid the price that lets sinful man drink from the fountains of eternal life. Without Him, we face a terrible eternal thirst. Are you thirsting for life that will never end? If so, please listen, as we learn more about a cry from the cross.

The crucifixion of Christ was not an accident of history. The painful details of that awful day were foretold in Scripture. When Jesus said, "I thirst," He fulfilled the words of Psalm 69. In fact, Jesus fulfilled the words of many prophets spoken hundreds of years before He came, words that told of a sacrifice, a "wounding for our transgressions," all to bring us to God.

In just two words, Jesus proves His humanity as He hangs on the cross. Two words prove His sufferings were real. We hear Him say, "I thirst," not understanding how painful that thirst had to be. Today: we come to grips with the awful price Jesus paid to reconcile us with God the Father.

In this life, we will never understand the sufferings of Christ on Calvary, nor His pain when the Father forsook Him there. We hear Him say, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" but we can't understand what it was like for the Son to lose fellowship with the Father. Today: some lessons we can understand from the fourth saying of Christ on the cross.

There are many mysteries in the Bible: mysteries we can never fully understand. One of them was uttered by Jesus on the cross; "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" God turns His back on His only Son as the Lamb of God is slain. Today, we will describe the unthinkable mystery, and then try to comprehend it.

Could more heart-rending words ever be spoken than these from the cross: "My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?" Jesus was abandoned by God the Father as the price of sin was paid in full. In this dark moment, Jesus uttered the fourth of the seven sayings from the cross, and today we'll try to understand what He meant.
