When You Make a Selfish Choice, Part 1 of 2 (Making the Best of a Bad Decision)

May 8, 2013

A moral mistake can be the mistake of a lifetime. King David made a big mistake with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite. He wanted to keep it a secret—and try as he might, he couldn’t cover it up—even those who haven’t read the Bible have probably heard the story.

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. Have you ever made a hasty promise only to find out you were being played? You’re not the only one. Joshua faced the same thing with the Gibeonites. But his response is a model for how we should react after we find out we’ve made a reckless promise.

Bad decisions. At some point and time we’ve all made one. Sometimes we don’t even know why. But what can we do about them? God offers hope to those willing to listen.

When you think of “Eden,” you think of a paradise where life is carefree and there’s nothing to worry about. But it was in this paradise that Adam and Eve sinned and sealed the fate for all of mankind.

Hindsight is 20-20. Anyone can see the results of a choice after it’s made. It’s tough to predict the future. What do you do when you’ve made a bad call, and have to live with it? The Bible has many examples of this, and today we begin a series on Making the Best of a Bad Decision. We’ll learn that there is hope, even if we’ve really messed things up.

All of this life is a preparation for the one to come. For the believer, this finite life will give way to an eternal one, and what God has prepared for those who have trusted Christ is beyond imagination. Not only will sorrows and pain cease, but we’ll experience “joy inexpressible and full of glory.” Today, a last look at perhaps the most important part of the invisible world: a place called heaven.

We can’t see the life to come as clearly as we see what’s around us. But the Bible does give some tantalizing views of what’s ahead for a child of God. Once we have a grasp of the wonders that await us, making it through this life gets a lot easier. Join us as we peer across the great divide into the ultimate destiny for all who trust Christ.

One of Satan’s favorite tactics is to whisper to Christians, “See, you sinned! You’re not worthy to get into heaven!”  The truth Satan hides when he does this is that believers don’t stand on their own records. They stand on the merits of Jesus. This allows us to deal with the guilt that often paralyzes us. Knowing our place in Christ means we can tell Satan to get lost.

A hymn-writer penned these words: “…clothed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.”  The Bible tells us that when we become believers in Christ, we’re given new spiritual clothing. The righteousness of Jesus is wrapped around us, making us worthy to stand before a holy God. In today’s message, we’ll see an Old Testament preview of this wonderful truth.
