The Belt of Truth, Part 2 of 2 (The Invisible War)

November 12, 2013

The first lie ever told was from Satan in the Garden of Eden. “Has God said…” the serpent hissed, planting seeds of doubt. He’s still hissing that same old song today, trying to get believers to either doubt the Scriptures or ignore them altogether. It is all part of his strategy in “The Invisible War.” We need to wear “The Belt of Truth” to ward off these demonic temptations.

When You’ve Been Wronged
Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but healing and reconciliation often is not. Time and again we've tried every option and failed, and all we are left with is a load of guilt and pain. Pastor Erwin Lutzer shows how the blessing the Lord gives to those who suffer unjustly is worth the pain involved. He also illustrates the need to leave our broken relationships in the hands of God and move forward in our lives toward freedom. New army recruits are given weapons during basic training. The idea is to learn how to use them well for the day of battle. God has provided several weapons we as believers use to fight “The Invisible War.” The Apostle Paul names them in Ephesians chapter six, in a list he calls “the armor of God.” Today, we enter basic training to learn how to use weapon number one.

Our lives may seem peaceful, but always in the background is the sound of war. That is because there is a war going on in a place we cannot see Demonic forces wage a battle against the saints of God on a daily basis, a battle that will not end until we enter the eternal state. Our job is to learn to use God’s weapons so that we may share in the ultimate victory.

War, it seems, is never far away – and that is just on the plane of existence we can see. But beyond what our senses can discern is a greater war, a cosmic conflict of the ages, being fought by Satan and his legions against the purposes and plans of God. Today, we lift the veil on “The Invisible War.”

It is unthinkable that two plus two could ever equal five. But more unthinkable are recent Supreme Court decisions in America. The Defense of Marriage Act?  Unconstitutional.  California’s Proposition 8 prohibiting gay marriage? Again, unconstitutional. Powerful politics from small sectors of society are determining our nation’s future. Today we will look at some directives to the church from Erwin Lutzer as we face the erosion of morality.

The U.S. Supreme Court chambers are adorned with a large display of the Ten Commandments. Recent decisions of the Supreme Court contradict the standards listed in those commands. The long road to American ruin is not only here, we are nearing its end.

We can still enjoy July 4 fireworks, but for many Christians, the liberties we celebrate are now being sharply curtailed. Under pressure from agenda-driven groups, what was once free speech is now a federal crime. In the public schools, tax money is used to indoctrinate our kids in the homosexual lifestyle. Is there a time to stand up and say “no?” Pastor Lutzer says that now is the time.

For a long time, Christians could comfortably wave the American flag, since they saw their values represented in “Old Glory….” Now the government is repressing the freedoms Christians once had, favoring those desiring same–sex marriage and unrestricted abortion. When the red, white and blue no longer blends with the cross of Christ, what do believers do?

Like snowflakes, no two people are alike. The differences bring great variety, but they can also plant seeds of conflict. Each of us is wired from birth to put self first. Only the Spirit of God can smooth the rough edges and help us extend ourselves in blessing to others.  Today, Dr. Erwin Lutzer tells the story of a cab driver with a horrid past, a man who needed a friend.

As someone once said, “The church is wonderful, I love the church – I just can’t stand the people.” We are certainly not in the Garden of Eden anymore.  When disagreements and personal agendas rise to the surface, frictions can occur even between believers. Today, Dr. Erwin Lutzer exposes a not-so-secret secret:  Christians do not always get along.

Despite the wide variety of Christian denominations, you will find some common elements in them all. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are two sacraments all Christians observe in one way or another. Dr. Erwin Lutzer tells us what we share as fellow believers, despite our differences, and gives us a big-picture view of the church from God’s perspective.
