Judging Appearances #1 of 2

Take one look at TV and it's clear that life at its best is reserved for "beautiful people"...people like Britney Spears. The price tags have been switched, and now, many assess their value based on how they look. This distorted view of self is damaging, especially to young people, including Christian young people. So, how do we counteract it? To find out, please listen with us.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. At no time in history has the entertainment culture invaded the church more than it has today. How should a Christian respond? One way is by doing an honest evaluation of the entertainment we seem to be addicted to. Last time on Running to Win we took the content test and the control test. How are you doing so far? Well, the test is not yet over... it concludes during this broadcast, so listen with us.

It's amazing -- you can scan a hundred channels of cable TV and come to the conclusion that there's nothing on worth watching. Entertainment has sunk to new lows. To a large degree, movies, popular music and TV have become a wasteland. How can a Christian discern what to watch or what to listen to? Is it time now to toss out the large-screen TV?

Signs and wonders always attract attention. But few take notice when a man or woman finds salvation through Christ. Where is God's power most clearly seen? In a healed tumor, or in a life changed from the inside out? Those with discerning hearts know that the power of the gospel far outweighs the power seen in miracles, signs and wonders. For more, listen with us.

In some cities, you can attend a miracle healing service almost any night, or see one on cable TV throughout the day. Miracles: they seem to be everywhere, and almost everybody wants one. Whose heart isn't moved by seeing someone in a wheelchair desperate to walk again? But think: could these so-called miracles really be a form of demonic deception? Listen with us.

In both Testaments, the Bible has a lot to say about false prophets. Most of it is bad news for prophet and listener alike. Modern-day false prophets promise blessing without repentance, and prosperity for all who send a gift. Some TV preachers exploit the vulnerable and lead many astray. Today, how to tell when teaching is off the mark, and error has replaced truth.

In a time when people won't endure sound doctrine, it's no great surprise to see so many false prophets on the airwaves. Television: it sells people what they want to buy. Some programmers use it to sell false doctrines and millions are eating it up. Today, how a discerning believer can and must separate truth from error when listening to religious teaching on TV.

There's no doctrine more important than the doctrine of salvation: the gospel. Without it, we face a cold, dark, eternity. There is no room for error or opinion when your soul is at stake. What you and I need is the truth, and nothing but the truth. Today: the core components of the gospel, and why any teaching that omits them or distorts them is heresy.

If you watch enough religious cable TV, you'll be totally confused about which doctrines are true and which are false. In the marketplace of religious ideas, packaging and glitz often carry more weight than biblical truth. Today: you'll hear a pointed call to return to a standard against which doctrines must be measured...doctrines that impact your eternal destiny.

When seeing the faults of others, our vision is 20/20. But it's 20/200 when focusing on our own faults. Jesus taught us to not judge a small splinter in someone else's eye without first removing the large wood beam from our own eye. That principle is found in Matthew chapter 7...and it's our focus on today's broadcast. So...how's your eye today?

Turn on your cable TV, and you'll see a variety of religious experiences. Are they all valid? And, is it even OK to ask? There is much error mixed with truth these days, and so the wise believer runs what he or she sees through a filter of discernment. Today: a foundational study in Matthew chapter 7 to help us know when, and how, to judge what we see.
