It’s Christmas Eve, and the glow of the lights in the tree can be seen in the eyes of kids eagerly awaiting the opening of presents. How different from that night in Bethlehem, where a poor couple was turned away from a decent room and had to make do where the animals were kept. And there, to give birth to the Son of God. Today: some thoughts about that first Christmas from the perspective of heaven.

In ancient societies, shepherds had the low rung on the ladder. Their jobs were smelly, and the hours were long. When Jesus was born, the heavenly host of angels did not appear to the ruling elite. They passed by local middle class merchants. Instead, they appeared to the humblest people they could find: shepherds in the hills of Bethlehem, shepherds tending sacrificial sheep for the temple.

A lot of people have misconceptions about angels. Some see them as heavenly versions of Casper the Friendly Ghost, but in the Bible, the word “angel” simply means “messenger.” These beings serve God in heaven and on earth, doing His bidding. When they massed over Bethelem the night Jesus was born, they heralded the greatest message that has ever been sent.

After the last prophet’s writings, the voice of God fell silent in Israel for four hundred years. Then, one day a brilliant light flooded the skies over a sleepy town south of Jerusalem. Myriads of angels announced the coming of a Savior, who was Christ the Lord. These messengers of God proclaimed the greatest news sinful mankind would ever hear.

Jesus said of Himself, “the son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” He always had to sleep in someone else’s home. His first night on earth was in a borrowed manger, a cattle feeding trough. The Son of God began His time among us in rude surroundings. No kingly pomp. Just a humble bed of straw. We can learn much from his first hours in Bethlehem, and today, we will.

Bethlehem lies six miles south of Jerusalem. These days, a barrier wall separates the two to prevent violence. The conflict between Palestinians and Jews is as old as the Bible, and this division is symbolic of another division: that between a holy God and sinful man. Two thousand years ago that wall was breached in a feeding trough behind an inn in the tiny town of Bethlehem.

When mankind rebelled against God, the chasm between the two was infinite. Justice demanded payment for this great sin. Only God could bridge this gap, and he did so by sending Jesus into the world, born into a peasant family in Israel. This baby was much more than he seemed at first appearance. The Apostle Paul wrote of a deep mystery: “great is the mystery of godliness; God was manifest in the flesh.” At Christmas we remember a night like no other, the night Jesus was born on planet Earth. Some of the early church’s darkest days were its brightest, the days of persecution under the Caesars in the city of Rome. We who run life’s race today may complain that we are persecuted for our faith. But we have it a lot easier than our forebears, who were killed by lions and gladiators to please Roman officials and a cheering audience. In Rome, key events shaped the future of the Christian church.

In its glory days, runners could get there from anywhere, because of only one city was it ever said: “All roads lead to...” Rome. Rome became the center of a great world empire. Here the Caesars reigned; here, the gladiators fought, and here the Christians were persecuted. Before its downfall, Rome was the place where the church and state became one.
