The Church of God in Service Part 7
Dr. Abel Damina: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, praise the Lord. Abel Damina is my name. I want to welcome you to this broadcast, a time of learning, a time of unlearning, and a time of relearning.
The essence of this broadcast is to bring to you the revelation of Jesus Christ. The mandate of God on our ministry is the revelation of Jesus, re-introducing Jesus to this generation, equipping the believer to know who you are in Christ, what you have in Christ, and what Christ can do through you.
So get ready, fasten your seat belts today. We're going to adventure in the scriptures. The scriptures tell us in John 5:39, Jesus speaking to the Jews, he said, "You search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life, but they are they which testify of me." The Bible is Christ-centric. It's a message centered on the person of Jesus Christ.
So get ready today as we traverse through the pages of the scriptures, unveiling Christ so we can reveal your true identity in Christ. Because once you know who you are in Christ, then you will know what you have in Christ, and then you can be able to know what Christ can do through you. It gives you a life of fulfillment, a life that is purpose-driven so you can make the impact you were designed to make in this life through the gospel of Jesus Christ. Call a friend, call a loved one, tell somebody to tell somebody to hook up right now as I take you into that service where the spirit of our God is already moving. Happy listening.
We've been examining the church of God in service. Matthew chapter 28, verse number 18 to 20. Matthew the 28th chapter, verse 18 to 20.
Guest (Female): And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth."
Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
Dr. Abel Damina: The mandate of the church upon the resurrection was to go and make disciples. Go and make disciples. Any church that is not going is dying. Go and make disciples of all nations. The word "matheteuo". Go and turn men into students, students of everything that I have commanded you. That is what I have taught you, go and teach others. Go and raise others.
So discipleship is the art of training men in the gospel of Jesus Christ. The art of training men in the gospel of Jesus Christ by precept and example. Brother Paul will say to Timothy in Second Timothy chapter 2, verse 2, he said, "The things that you have heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men who shall be able to teach others also." That's discipleship. The things I have learned faithfully, I in turn will get other people and teach them exactly what I have learned.
And because it had the power to transform me, it will also transform them. So there's a ripple effect. I am impacted, and what impacted me, I took it and I gave to other people, who gave to other people. Now, it's so critical to know that that is the will of God for the church. The mission of God for the church is very specific. Go and make disciples. How do you make disciples? By teaching, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.
So any child of God that is not going is living in disobedience. He didn't say invite them to come. He said you go to where they are and make disciples of every nation. You go and turn them into students. So discipleship is critical because it is the mandate and the mission of the church. In Mark chapter 16, verse number 15.
Guest (Female): And he said unto them, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
And these signs shall follow them that believe: in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.
Dr. Abel Damina: They went forth in obedience. They went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, confirming his word with signs following. That means you've got to have targets. Every month, at least five disciples. Every month, if I didn't do anything at all, five people who got born again through my hands, who I am raising as disciples.
Depending on your capacity. But no month should pass by without you increasing men into the kingdom. No month should pass by. They went forth everywhere. They went everywhere, preaching God's word, the Lord working with them, confirming his word with signs and wonders following.
Jesus turned to Simon Peter and he said, "Simon son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? Do you truly love me?" And he says, "Yes, Lord." He said, "Feed my sheep. Raise disciples." Three times. "Do you love me more than these? Raise disciples, feed my sheep." The proof of love for Jesus and the proof of genuine committed love for Jesus will be in the raising of disciples.
You cannot say you love Jesus and all you're doing is having a nice time in the kingdom of God, enjoying revelation knowledge and just enjoying Christ meanwhile souls are perishing. For it is the will of God to have all men to be saved. So when you are saving men, you are in the will of God. If you're not doing anything about the salvation of men, you are not in the will of God. The will of God is to have every man to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. That is discipleship. Get them saved and disciple them to the knowledge of the truth.
So if you truly love the Lord, the proof is that you'll be involved in evangelism. You don't even need announcement from the pulpit. That will be your commitment to Jesus, your personal, deliberate, intentional commitment to Jesus. Committed to souls, committed to discipleship, committed to evangelism on your own. You don't need to be mobilized. You mobilize yourself. You are self-mobilized because you have understood that that is the will of God.
You have understood that that is the mission of the church. You have understood that that is the plan, the purpose, the project of God on the earth today. And to be on course with God himself, you've got to be found doing what God is doing right now. He will not have any soul to perish. He will have all men to be saved. That's the mandate of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now, we've been looking at a number of things here, and we've established that God's word was communicated in human language. God's word was communicated in human language. We've also established that because it's communicated in human language, it also carries with it the culture of the people, the culture of the people. So in the book of Luke chapter 24, verse number 25.
Guest (Female): Then he said unto them, "O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken."
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
Dr. Abel Damina: Jesus himself, beginning at Moses and all the prophets. Now, don't forget, they went everywhere preaching God's word. Jesus says go and raise disciples, teaching them to observe whatsoever things I have commanded you. So what did he command? Jesus meets the disciples and begins to teach them, beginning at Moses and all the prophets.
So we said Jesus' Bible had 39 books. Jesus' Bible had 39 books, Genesis to Malachi. Jesus didn't teach from Matthew; there was no Matthew. Jesus didn't teach from Mark, Luke, and John. He didn't teach from Acts. He taught from the scriptures. And then we established that the scriptures would be Moses, the Prophet, and the Psalms. And Jesus copiously taught from those books.
Now, it's also important to observe that Jesus emphasized that if you had read the scriptures very carefully, ought not Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory? So we said that Jesus is found in their stories. Jesus is found in the stories of the Old Testament. And Jesus is also found in their promises, the promises that was made.
We looked at Ezekiel, how that Ezekiel told us what God promised: "I will take away the stony heart. I will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you. I will cause you to walk in my statutes." And then the question is, how is God going to do that? "I will pour clean water upon you." Ezekiel 36. Then the answer came in Ezekiel 37: "Son of man, can these bones live?"
And Ezekiel said, "Lord God, thou knowest." And God said, "This is how to bring dry bones to life: prophesy." Prophecy is the preaching of God's word. Prophecy is the preaching of God's word. And we said it was not Ezekiel that prophesied. Ezekiel saw that vision, but the real person who prophesied life to the dry bones is Jesus Christ.
So Jesus can be seen in the prophets. He can be seen in Moses, the books of Moses. He says, "Do not think that I will accuse you to the father. There is one that accuseth you, even Moses in whom you trust. For had you believed Moses, you would have believed me, for he wrote of me." So in Moses, we see Jesus. In the prophets, we see Jesus. And in the Psalms, we see Jesus.
So Jesus is now that prophet who will prophesy and life will enter into dry bones. Jesus is that prophet that Ezekiel saw that God said prophesy, who will prophesy and life will enter. And we said life is what? Spirit. Spirit is what? Life. So life will enter, or spirit will enter.
So on the way to Emmaus and on the event of the 40 days of Jesus' teaching, he had the word of eternal life. How do we know that Jesus had the word of eternal life? Because he rose from the dead. He had the words of eternal life. That's why when he said to Peter and the others, "Won't you also go?" in John chapter 6, Peter said, "To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."
No wonder Jesus would say, "You search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life, but they are they which testify of me." Then he said, "You will not come to me that you may have life." Jesus has the words of eternal life. He is the one that baptizes with the Holy Ghost. He is the one that baptizes with the spirit. He is the one that gives life. The life-giving spirit comes from Jesus.
So when he prophesied and the breath of life came into the bones, the bones arose and exceeding great army. Glory to God. And today that army is rising all over the nations of the earth because the breath of God is finding expression into men all over the earth.
So in other words, we began to say that Jesus is the fullness of all the anointed ones in the Old Testament. We took time to establish that the word "Christ" is not a name; it's not a proper name. It's a description. And we began to see all the Christs in the Old Testament. The priest, the prophet, and the kings, and the place. Places were also called anointed; they were called Christ.
So in other words, what we're saying is Jesus carries within him the identity of everything God ever anointed. Jesus carries within him the identity of everything God ever anointed. That is why Jesus is the fullness of the anointing. In other words, we have the plan, and we have the inauguration of the plan.
We are establishing that Jesus is the fullness of all of God's plan, which means if the Old Testament Christs suffered, Jesus will suffer. If the Old Testament Christs were rejected, Jesus will be rejected. Now, if you read the Old Testament and you didn't see God's anointed people suffer, then Jesus has no reason to suffer.
But from the blood of Abel to Zechariah, we see persecution and suffering, which means Jesus will be the climax of all of the sufferings and the rejections and ultimately the death that was exemplified in the anointed ones in the Old Testament. We saw that they were rejected. We saw that they were killed.
So Jesus will now say to those guys, "Ought not Christ..." Why are you surprised that Christ was buried, he was killed? Why are you surprised? If you read Moses and the prophets carefully, ought not Christ, because the Christ suffered. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?
So the moment you believe that this man that descended into humanity by the incarnation in Mary, the moment you believe that he is anointed, then you shouldn't be surprised that he suffered. So we have the priest in Christ, we have the king in Christ, we have the prophet in Christ. So Jesus is not just the Christ, because there are different Christs, but he is the promised Christ. He is the anointed in the promise. Now look at Luke chapter 24, verse 21.
Guest (Female): But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done.
Dr. Abel Damina: We trusted. So they knew that he was going to be a redeemer, but in their minds, they were thinking of a political redeemer. So their minds were contrary to the scriptures. They were thinking scriptural thoughts out of the plan of God. "We thought he was the one that was going to redeem Israel." And that's why Jesus said, "If you were reading the scriptures, you wouldn't think like that. Ought not Christ, from what you read, to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?"
Now, remember we said that those who were anointed, apart from the Tabernacle and the sacrifices, were primarily priests, kings, and prophets. Deuteronomy chapter 17, verse 14. Let's see Moses now.
Guest (Female): When thou art come unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, "I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me."
Dr. Abel Damina: So Moses now is predicting that the time will come when the nation of Israel will want a king. Now God is their king. God was ruling over them because Israel was God's people. But then Moses said, "The way I see you guys, I can predict that not too long from now, because I'm not going to Canaan with you, but I know that somewhere you will want to have kings like other nations."
And then he now began to say to them, you will want to be like the other nations like the world. And Moses said, "Okay, it's fine. We're not going to force you to stay with God by force. But..." Look at verse 18 and 19. Pay attention.
Guest (Female): And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites.
And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them.
Dr. Abel Damina: Which means God will anoint a king that he did not initiate. Don't miss that. God will anoint a king that he did not initiate. He will therefore accommodate their carnal desires. God will tolerate or accommodate their carnal desires. And some will say why will God accommodate their carnal desires? The answer is that was what was available.
All God has is a man. And the man has weaknesses and frailties. The man has shortcomings and imperfections, and God will use him like that because that's the best that God has. Man is God's method. All right, that's why Jesus was not made after the nature of angels, but after the seed of Abraham, because God's best is man.
And even the best that God has has weaknesses. So God will accommodate because that's what God has. All available to God were weakness, frailty, and sin, darkness. But God's long-suffering is seen in how he got into their desires and worked it for his good. God's long-suffering is seen in how he got into their desires, which were contrary to him, and in long-suffering eventually worked it out for their good.
Their selfish carnal desires, he worked it out for their good. So Moses said, "I know a day will come and you will say 'We are tired of God being our king. We want a king that will lead us to war.'" Moses said, "Okay, you want to go and fight wars, you want to go and defeat other nations, you want to reign, you want to subdue, you want to conquer because that's what the world is all about."
That's why a country will stand up and throw a bomb in another country. And if they respond, they come after them. And in the midst of coming after them, they begin to mark their treasures because once the war is over, they will evacuate their treasures and bring to their country and subdue them and rule over them. That's the way humans are. That's why there's class in society.
Man is never contented. Man is greedy. The more rich you get, the more richer you want to get. The more rich you get, the more richest you want to get, even if it's at the expense of everybody else. Even if it is at the expense of everybody else. Somebody said to me somewhere, he said, "Anywhere you see war, there are people becoming millionaires by that war and there are people praying for that war not to end."
Because some people, that war is their opportunity to be rich. Even though people are dying, they're happy for the people to die because that is their only moment and that is their season of making money. That's the way man is. So it's not God. That's why you can't be bringing God into those kind of things.
God is not the initiator. God only steps in in his long-suffering to see how he can within what man has provided bring the best that can be brought out of it. Now, Moses said, "Make sure that the king you will choose will be your brother." Look at it in verse 15 and 16. Give me that scripture. Deuteronomy chapter 17, verse 15 and 16.
Guest (Female): Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the Lord thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the Lord hath said unto you, "Ye shall henceforth return no more that way."
Dr. Abel Damina: He said, even though the king you want is not what God wants for you, it's not the best, but since that's what you want, let's get the best that we can get out of it. Make sure he does not multiply horses. Number two, make sure he doesn't take the people back to Egypt. He's helping them. He's giving them things that will make it at least bearable within the circumstances. Look at verse 17 of that same scripture in Deuteronomy.
Guest (Female): Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites.
And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them.
Dr. Abel Damina: And so what Moses was saying is, make sure he's not a water-thirsty general. He said, "That's not the kind of king you should choose." But the point is, that's the kind of king they eventually had. That means, he says, "Make sure he is a servant king. Make sure what you choose is a servant king, a teacher of the law. Make sure who you choose is a Bible teacher. Make sure it's somebody that will be a shepherd over the people and will be a servant to serve the people."
But that's not the kind of kingdom they wanted. So in First Samuel chapter 8, eventually this came to pass. They came to Samuel and said... Give me First Samuel chapter 8, verse 5 and 8.
Guest (Female): And said unto him, "Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
Dr. Abel Damina: Moses' prophecy has come to pass. Verse 9.
Guest (Female): Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
Dr. Abel Damina: So even though you're going to let them have what they want, let them know the implications. Verse 11 and 12 of First Samuel chapter 8.
Guest (Female): And he said, "This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots."
Dr. Abel Damina: Those are the kind of kings that you will have since you don't want God to rule over you, and that's what we have in democracy. Give me verse 18 and 19.
Guest (Female): And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
Dr. Abel Damina: Because it is your choice. It is not God's choice. It's man's choice because God never intended for a man to rule another man. Ever. God never intended. God wanted every man to have freedom of expression of his will under his oversight.
But men said, "No, we don't want you. Let us rule ourselves." God said, "You can have it." And from then God doesn't get involved. You choose whom you want. Whichever ruler you choose, you deserve. It can never be God. Even the president of America cannot be the will of God. Even the president of Israel cannot be the will of God. It's men that choose rulers, and it's men that will have to live with the consequences of their choice.
So they said, "We still want a king." And so God helped them to choose one. So in the Old Testament, we began to look at the use of oil. How many of you remember we went through anointing oil? So we said God did not initiate the use of oil; it was a cultural practice, right? And we saw it from scripture.
We also saw that the appointment of a king over a people, God did not initiate but God used it. God didn't initiate but God used it. So pay attention to that. They chose a king like the other nations. So was that king anointed? Because God will use what we make available. So was that king anointed?
God will work within what we have provided and see whatever is the best that can come out of it for our sake because of his long-suffering. Oh yeah. If you put a devil in the office, God will anoint him for us. It's for us, not for him, because God loves us. Even though we didn't listen to him, he will not abandon us. He will still work within what we have provided and see what best can come out of it.
It could have been worse if God had abandoned us. It could have been worse if God had abandoned us, but he will not abandon us. Even when we mess up, he will still look for how to help us. If the king is anointed, is that king Christ? Yes. Was King Saul Christ? Yes. The nation of Israel in Exodus, are they Christ? Yes, because they're God's people. Were they disobedient? So they were disobedient Christ. So we have anointed kings and priests. Psalm 110, verse 2 and 4.
Guest (Female): The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, "Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek."
Dr. Abel Damina: The Lord has sworn and will not repent. Now that's a king, anointed king. Rule in the midst of thine enemies. That's anointed king. Genesis 14:18 talks about Melchizedek, who was a king and a priest, a king and a priest.
So whoever David is speaking of here when he calls or whom he calls Adonai, "The Lord said to my Lord", Yahweh said to Adonai, that Adonai that Yahweh spoke to is a king and a priest. Let's call him a servant king. Look at Deuteronomy 18:15.
Guest (Female): The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.
Dr. Abel Damina: Moses knows at this point he's not taking Israel to Canaan. So he said, "The Lord your God shall raise up a prophet unto you of your brethren, him shall you hear," and that prophet is like unto me. Please don't miss that. That prophet is like unto me. So can we say this prophet that the Lord shall call or shall raise is also anointed? Okay, so the prophet is like unto Moses; he's also anointed.
Now how many of you know that Moses was never called a prophet even though he was a prophet in a sense? That's why he's always a standalone. "Beginning at Moses and all the prophets", he was always in a class, okay? He was never combined with the prophets. Because if he was combined, they would just say "Beginning at the prophets".
But Moses as a standalone and all the prophets. Because Moses is a deliverer. Moses is sent to deliver Israel and take them to the land of promise. Moses is a redeemer, a deliverer, a redeemer, and a savior. He's not just a prophet. In Deuteronomy chapter 18, verse 15, Moses shall be a deliverer, a redeemer. Moses will be a savior.
So Moses says, "The Lord your God shall raise up a redeemer, a deliverer, a savior like unto me. Him shall you hear." Of course he said, "And it shall come to pass whosoever shall not hear him shall be destroyed. He that believeth not is condemned." So Moses is saying there'll be a deliverer prophet who is also called Christ. In Acts 3:22 to 23 you can study at home.
So God had been called before today a servant God. God had been called before today a servant God. In Genesis chapter 48, verse 15.
Guest (Female): And he blessed Joseph, and said, "God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day."
Dr. Abel Damina: Where Jacob was speaking, "God who had fed me". Now we are talking about the church where? In service, right? Okay, don't worry, at the end you will soon see how it all comes. I just saw somebody like "Ah-ah, church in service, where are we?" We have not even called church.
A little here, a little there, precept upon precept. That's how Bible doctrine is built. Don't rush, just be calm, we'll get there. Genesis 48:15 again.
Guest (Female): And he blessed Joseph, and said, "God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day."
Dr. Abel Damina: So the word there is "God who is my shepherd", the word ra'ah, R-A-A-H in the Hebrew. The word ra'ah. Then there's another word he used there, the word "angel". Angel there is the word malak, M-A-L-A-K. So what he was saying is God the shepherd, God the servant.
God the shepherd, God the servant, and Moses the servant of God. Malak there is the angel which actually means servant. Ra'ah there is the shepherd. So God the shepherd, God the servant, but don't forget Moses also the servant of God.
Moses is saying someone will be a deliverer, a servant, and a prophet at the same time. A deliverer, a servant, and a prophet at the same time. Jacob calls him a shepherd, ra'ah. Look at Exodus 23, verse 20 to 21.
Guest (Female): Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.
Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.
Dr. Abel Damina: Behold, I will send my angel... There is the word malak. I will send my servant. I will send my servant. Look at that word "servant", a servant like God. A servant like God or a God-like servant.
So which means, a servant like God. Well, I thought it was Moses and Joshua that did it. I thought they were the ones that brought Israel out and took Israel in. Moses out, Joshua in. Yes, they were, but they were the agents. They were the agents that God used to bring out and take in to exemplify the ministry of Jesus. In Malachi chapter 3, verse 1, you will see the use of that word malak again.
Guest (Female): Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
Dr. Abel Damina: Even the messenger of the covenant. Again the word malak. Malak. He calls the Lord the messenger. He calls the Lord the messenger. Look at Isaiah 40, verse 3.
Guest (Female): The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God."
Dr. Abel Damina: So there is a promised choice. Someone is being promised who will be embodying the king, the prophet, the priest, the deliverer, the redeemer, a promised one, and a servant who is God. A prophet like unto me shall the Lord your God raise up unto your fathers. Him shall you hear. There's a promised choice.
Him shall you hear. That already distinguishes him from Moses. Him shall you hear. Someone is being promised who will be embodying the king, a prophet, a priest, a deliverer, a redeemer, a promised one, a servant who is God. So the word Christ will fit him because of what he does.
The word Christ will fit him because of what he does, which others have done before, but he is the Christ. Unlike they who are different portions, he has the fullness. They have portions, he is the fullness of all the little, little portions. So he's the promised one, or we can call him the anointed one. The anointed one.
So question: will he bear their sufferings? Talk to me, citizens. Will he bear their sufferings? Will he take their responsibilities? Will he do what they couldn't do in fulfillment for them? Are you sure? All right. Which means that in the saving work of Jesus, he also helps all the prior servants of God in the Old Testament to finish their tasks.
He helped all the prior servants of God in the Old Testament to finish their tasks. He is the anointed one. He bears their sufferings. He bears the pains. He takes on himself their tasks and responsibilities. What Abraham couldn't do even though God gave him the promise, what Moses couldn't do even though God gave him the mandate, Jesus the anointed one would do it on their behalf.
Jesus the anointed one would do it on their behalf. Moses brought them out of Egypt and was supposed to take them to the promised land, but he couldn't. Jesus brought us out of darkness and took us into the light. So what Moses couldn't finish, Jesus finished it on their behalf. So he doesn't just bear sins; he bears sufferings. He doesn't just bear sins and sufferings; he bears responsibilities as the anointed one. He bears responsibilities as the anointed one.
So Romans chapter 10... Don't forget we are still looking at the church, right? So can we read the story of Jesus the Christ in the stories of the Christ of the Old Testament? Let me ask again. Can we read the story of Jesus the Christ in the Christs of the Old Testament? Yes. All right. Very good.
So can we read his story from their story? And we can read the fullness of their story in his story, right? Romans 10:5, 6, and 7.
Guest (Female): For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, "That the man which doeth those things shall live by them."
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, "Say not in thine heart, 'Who shall ascend into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down from above)."
"Or, 'Who shall descend into the deep?' (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead)."
Dr. Abel Damina: Who shall ascend into the deep? Who shall go up to heaven? To bring Christ, to bring Christ. Deuteronomy 30:11. Don't forget on the way to Emmaus, it was beginning at Moses and all the prophets he expounded unto them in all the scriptures.
So Jesus was bringing from the scriptures what he has fulfilled in his resurrection. That's how you should be teaching, and that's what we're doing here. Deuteronomy 30:11.
Guest (Female): For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.
Dr. Abel Damina: It's not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. Now remember the word Christ, okay? Romans chapter 10, verse 4.
Guest (Female): For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Dr. Abel Damina: Of course, Christ here will refer to Jesus, right? He's the end of the law for righteousness. All right, then verse 5 of Romans chapter 10.
Guest (Female): For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, "That the man which doeth those things shall live by them."
Dr. Abel Damina: So Moses here is a type of Christ. Moses here is a type of Christ. So since Moses is a typology of Christ, Deuteronomy chapter 30, verse 11 and 12 again.
Guest (Female): For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.
It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, "Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?"
Dr. Abel Damina: Who is speaking here? Moses. Moses the anointed one, right? Hello. So Moses Christ. Moses Christ. But there's a problem, because Brother Paul said who shall go to heaven to bring Christ down? And I didn't see that in Deuteronomy. Or go to the abyss, the depth of the sea to bring Christ from the dead. I didn't see that also in Deuteronomy. Now pay attention.
Now question: in Deuteronomy, who went up to heaven to bring the law? Moses. In Deuteronomy, who took them across the sea? Moses. Now, why is he saying that in Deuteronomy chapter 30? Remember, he is not going to bring them to the promised land. The generation that came out of Egypt perished in the wilderness. All the fathers died. All of them.
So Moses gave the other generations the law again. Deuteronomy. Second law. Deuteronomos, the law the second time. Are you still here? The law the second time. So you have Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 like copy and paste.
But unlike Exodus 20, when he goes up to heaven to bring Christ down, when he goes up to the mountain, the mountain is heaven to bring the law down, he doesn't just dump it. In Deuteronomy 5, he simply restates what has been said the first time he went up and came down. So he didn't go up the second time.
He went up the first time, brought the law. When the fathers died, he restated the same law. He didn't go across the sea the second time. They only crossed the sea how many times? One time. Okay, good. We will only believe what God has already done and we will only believe what God has already said. You didn't get that. We will only believe what God has already done and we will only believe what God has already said.
So let me recap so that you're not lost. The generation that came out of Egypt, the adults perished. What did he do to that generation? He went up to the mountain, which is called heaven, to bring the law. He took them across the sea where Pharaoh and his soldiers died. So when he brought them out, he gave them the law.
Now Moses himself is not following them to the promised land, so a new generation has come. So Moses now gives them the law again. But he doesn't go to the mountain to bring it the second time. Does he take them to Egypt to cross the sea the second time? No. God has already done two things: he has given them the law, he has taken them across the sea.
So he said, "You don't need anyone to go up to heaven to bring it for you or to cross the sea. The word is nigh you and it's in your mouth and in your heart. What you need, I've been preaching it since. It is what I preached that your fathers did not believe that killed them. That same message is what I'm giving you. It's right in your heart and in your mouth. We don't have to go anywhere to bring; you don't need drama, the message is enough."
Which Paul now calls the word of faith or the word of God's faithfulness. The word of faith which we preach or the word of God's faithfulness. That is, God is faithful. What he has done he has done. What he has said he has said. So when Paul says to go to heaven to bring Christ down, which Christ was he talking about? He was talking about Moses. To go to heaven to bring Christ down, he was talking about Moses. What about across the sea? Moses, because Jesus didn't bring any law down for them and he didn't take them across any sea.
Does Moses' experience represent that of Jesus? Yes. So that text can both mean Moses and Jesus. But we can only understand what he is saying about Jesus when we look at the experiences of Moses. Which means Christ is risen from the dead. He has given us his promise and he has fulfilled the promise. He doesn't have to do it again.
He has given us the promise, he has fulfilled the promise. The promise that God made unto the fathers, he has fulfilled the same unto us their children in that he has raised Jesus again from the dead. It's just for you to believe. Believe in your heart what God has done, confess with your mouth.
So when he said, "Ought not Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory", or when you read First Corinthians chapter 15, verse 3... Give me First Corinthians chapter 15, verse 3 and 4, pay attention.
Guest (Female): For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.
Dr. Abel Damina: Can we say how that Christ died for our sins according to the stories of the Christ? Can we say how he was buried and how he rose again according to the promise made to the Christ? Yes. That is how to study those kind of scriptures.
So can we say Jesus is a new Moses? Yes. So that means he will be sent like Moses to save, to lead, to deliver, and also to suffer. If Jesus is the new Moses, he will be sent like Moses to save, to deliver, to lead, and to suffer. Remember we are studying the church of God in service. Matthew 26:28.
Guest (Female): For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Dr. Abel Damina: This is what Jesus was doing for 40 days, taking the scriptures and identifying his life with the scriptures. It was in the midst of this that their eyes opened. "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." Now this is taken from a few scriptures in the Old Testament. Let's look at them. Exodus 24, verse 8.
Guest (Female): And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, "Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words."
Dr. Abel Damina: Is Jesus a new Moses? So he took wine from the cup and he said, "This is my blood." And Moses took the blood in the cup. Everything according to the scriptures. This is where when they were set free from Egypt, this is what happened. Look at Exodus chapter 2, verse 8.
Guest (Female): And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." And the maid went and called the child's mother.
Dr. Abel Damina: Now Moses in prophecy from the beginning exemplified Christ. Jesus, just like Moses, took blood in the cup, Moses also took blood and he sprinkled on all the children of Israel, which means it was to symbolize what God had said.
So question: why did Jesus then use the word "new covenant"? Let's open that before we close. Are you ready? Let's push. Again, the word "new covenant" is from the Old Testament. I have told you there are some texts that are codified, right? And you need to go back and reread the text particularly when you see them in the four gospels or in the epistles. So where did we get the word "new"? Jeremiah 31. Now when we say "new covenant", what does it mean? Jeremiah 31:31 to 32.
Guest (Female): "Behold, the days come," saith the Lord, "that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah."
"Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them," saith the Lord.
Dr. Abel Damina: Again, God's word was communicated in human language within a particular culture that is not our language and our culture. So when you see "new", "new" doesn't mean new. When the word "new" was used, it doesn't mean for the first time in Bible days. If I say new today, it means something that has never been seen before, but that's not the way it was used in Bible days.
Let's establish a few things here. Exodus chapter 1, verse 8.
Guest (Female): Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
Dr. Abel Damina: A new king. That's an adjective. Is the word "kadash", spelled C-H-A-D-A-S-H. The word kadash, a new. Let's see the verb of the word "new". What does "new covenant" mean? Now we saw that when he said, "This is the blood of the new covenant", he was referring to Exodus.
How come they said "new"? Because the people God gave that promise to failed. The people God gave that promise to failed. So that means God could not bring his word to pass through them. And Jeremiah said it as much. Look at that Jeremiah 31:31 so you know that they failed.
Dr. Abel Damina: They broke my covenant. I gave them a covenant, they failed. They broke my word even though I was an husband to them. So the word "new" from the Old Testament words... Look at First Samuel chapter 11, verse 14.
Guest (Female): Then said Samuel to the people, "Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there."
Dr. Abel Damina: That word "renew" is the word kadash. Renew. So when you hear "new covenant", it's a renewed covenant. The word "renew", the verb of it. "Renew the kingdom", or it means to restore the kingdom. You will have it in Second Chronicles 15:8.
Guest (Female): And when Asa heard these words, and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he took courage, and put away the abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and out of the cities which he had taken from mount Ephraim, and renewed the altar of the Lord, that was before the porch of the Lord.
Dr. Abel Damina: Renewed the altar. Kadash. Then you have it also in Second Chronicles 24, verse 4 and 12, you can write that for further study. It means to repair something that has been broken, to repair something. Then in Job chapter 10, verse 17, to renew, kadash. Then in Psalm 51, verse 10, to renew. Then in Psalm 103, verse 5, kadash, renew. Then in Psalm 104, verse 30, renew, kadash. In Isaiah 61, verse 4, renew. Lamentations 5:21, renew.
Let me go over it again: Second Chronicles 15:8; Second Chronicles 24:4 and 12, to repair something that has been broken; Job 10:17, to renew; Psalm 51:10, renew; Psalm 103:5, renew; Psalm 104:30, renew; Isaiah 61:4; and Lamentations 5:21.
So when Jesus stopped and took the bread, he said, "This is the blood of a renewed promise. This is my blood of a renewed promise," or God's promise kept alive. That God would do what he had said. That God would fulfill what he had promised. That's what "new covenant" means. That is, in spite of the failure of the people, God would do what he had said he would do.
Now question: did Moses fail? Yes. Did Joshua fail? Yes. So if Jesus is the messenger, the renewed covenant of God, it means that Jesus will bring to pass all that Moses was trying to do. It means that Jesus will bring to pass all that Abraham and the patriarchs were trying to do. It simply means, in Jesus, we have a new Moses.
In Jesus, we have a new Joshua. In Jesus, we have a new Abraham. In Jesus, we have a new Isaac and Jacob. In Jesus, we have a renewal of God's word which all the prophets died and couldn't bring to pass. No wonder Hebrews says, "At sundry times in diverse manners the prophets spoke unto the fathers, hath in these last days spoken unto us in his son whom he hath appointed the legal owner of all that the prophets spoke about in Genesis to Malachi."
No wonder Jesus will now say, "These are the words which I spoke unto you, that all these things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the psalms, destination: concerning him." So all of them were exemplifying me, therefore they couldn't be perfect. There can be no perfection in the foreshadowing. No perfection in the shadow, no perfection in the types. Perfection will be in the reality.
Perfection will be in the reality. That's why all of them cannot really fulfill. You will see Christ in their actions but they will fail somewhere waiting for him, that prophet, that priest, that king. Can we also say that tabernacle? Glory to God. I say glory to God.
Things that were done in phrases and things that were done in phases, God has brought them to pass through Jesus. So for us to know what Jesus accomplished, we need to know where the journey began and where the journey was pointing to. What was the plan?
So Jesus is a new Moses. A renewed, a restored, a redeemer, a prophet, a king, a priest, a tabernacle. A renewed, restored, repaired, redeemer, prophet, king, priest, tabernacle. Can we add, Jesus is a people? Yes.
So in Luke chapter 9, before that I'm rounding off, we know the journey of the Christ by looking at the story of the Christs. We know the journey of the Christ by looking at the story of the Christs. Remember we are talking about the church in service.
So here is Jesus in a vision with Peter, James, and John, and Luke gives us a detail that nobody else gave us in the gospels. Luke was spot on; he gave us something that others didn't give us. Luke 9:31.
Guest (Female): Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
Dr. Abel Damina: And spake of his decease. The word "decease" there in the Greek is the word "exodus". He spoke of the exodus which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. And the word "exodus" there is Old Testament language. The exodus, his decease. Peter also spoke about it in Second Peter 1:15, exodus as decease. So Jesus will have an exodus like who? Moses.
Now what did Moses do before the exodus? He went back to Egypt, then he exited Egypt. Remember after he tried to kill somebody, he ran, and after 40 years of running, he came back to Egypt and then exited Egypt. He had to come back. Jesus himself will go to an Egypt. He will die. He will go to a place of bondage and a place of defeat. Then just like Moses, he will bring the people out.
A new people of a new covenant. So when he said to Peter, "Who do men say that I the son of man am?", and he says, "You are that anointed one, the son of the living God." The audience understood right there what he was saying. Because Moses came out of Egypt with a congregation.
Moses came out of Egypt with a congregation. "Upon this rock I will build my church." Can we say upon this rock I will build my Israel? Can we say upon this rock I will build my nation? Why? Because Jesus is a new Moses. Acts 7:53. Jesus is a new Moses.
Now wait, wait, wait. That doesn't mean you should now start praying, "Oh Father, in the name of a new Moses." We are using these words to bring further explanation, right? Okay, read for me.
Guest (Female): Who have received the law by the disposition of angels and have not kept it.
Dr. Abel Damina: Now wait. The word "church" therefore... The word "church" means congregation. A congregation of people who have exited Egypt. That's the meaning of the word "church". A congregation of people who have exited Egypt. A congregation of people who have left bondage. A congregation of people who have experienced the exodus. That's the church. It's a congregation.
But a congregation of people who have left Egypt, a congregation of people who have left bondage, and a congregation of people who have experienced an exodus. Give me Acts 7:37.
Guest (Female): This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, "A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear."
This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness...
Dr. Abel Damina: Repeat. So the word "church" didn't start in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The word "church" is an Old Testament verbiage. So when Peter and Jesus used it in Matthew, it was codified. So in order for us to understand the original meaning of that word and the cultural meaning of that word, what that word meant when it was intentionally and originally used, we cannot stay in Matthew; we have to go back to Exodus where the word originated from. Otherwise, then you don't know what church is.
If you cannot go back there and study what the church is, you will only be using your innovated idea of church which is not the biblical purpose or the biblical definition of the word "church", because it's codified in the four gospels. We understand the church therefore from the story of Israel.
The mission, the character of the church will be seen from the story of Israel. So Israel was called by God to possess the land; the church will also be called to do the same. If God is our redeemer and he has called Israel to possess a land, then we go back and read the mission of Israel to understand our collective mission as the church.
"I will bless those that bless you. In you shall all families of the earth be blessed." That's the mission. "I will bless those that bless you. I will curse those that curse you. In you shall all families of the earth be blessed." That's the mission. And let me tell you the mission from his original intent.
"And God blessed them. And God said, 'Be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, subdue it, and have dominion.'" That's the mission of the church in Genesis. Made louder when God spoke to Abraham: "In you shall all families of the earth be blessed." And they went everywhere preaching, the Lord working with them, confirming his word with signs and wonders. Stand on your feet.
Glory to God. Are we learning? Are we growing? Glory to God. Turn your neighbor, say "Hey neighbor, we are the church in service. We have a mission, the whole earth, the whole earth." Tell your neighbor it's not just Akwa Ibom, not just Nigeria, the whole earth. The families of the earth will be blessed by our commitment to the mandate of God to the nations. I didn't hear a good amen.
Say with me, "I'm committed to advance this cause. My life is situated in the center of God's plan for my life. I will not fail. I will not be distracted. Eyes on the ball. I'm committed to this mandate. And in the name of Jesus, I'm stirred up to do ministry. I will do ministry. I will do ministry. Or I will do ministry. Ministry is my life. My life is ministry. Glory to God." If you believe it, can I have a better amen?
Father, thank you for the privilege of learning, the privilege of growing in the knowledge of your assignment and mandate on our lives. We're committed to your cause, and we rejoice that through this mandate, nations are made the better for it. So we receive the harvest. Oh yeah, we receive the harvest. Oh yes, we receive the harvest.
Men and women coming into the kingdom from all walks of life. I say we receive the harvest in the name of Jesus. Barriers collapse, obstacles collapse in the name of Jesus. The word of the Lord has free course in the nations of the earth and is glorified as it is with us. We give you praise. In Jesus' name we pray and every believer says that amen on a note of finality. Go ahead, give the Lord a celebration. Glory, glory, glory to God. Amen.
