Trial Lesson 3: Contentment

John MacArthur: This is John MacArthur with another edition of Portraits of Grace. Our technologically advanced society depends heavily on material possessions, doesn't it?

But Jesus warned about the dangers of becoming too attached to them. He said no one can serve two masters: either he will hate the one and love the other, or hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and riches.

He's right. To counteract materialism's influence, God will sometimes subject us to trials that strip us of these things, sometimes leaving us in great need. At that point, we ought to realize that there are things much more important than material things.

I've watched even mature believers become less attached to temporal things as they go through suffering. As a Portrait of Grace, thank God for those things He brings into our lives to break our attachment to the world and to release us to enjoy heavenly anticipation.
